Four times a charm?

Four times a charm?

I don’t think anyone would claim that there were important players for the capitals in Washington prior to the Oveechkin era than both Peter Bondra and Olaf Kolzig. Bondra scored four times more than 40 goals in his career in the capitals, including more than 50 twice, and he hit the 70-point plateau six times while he was with Washington. He still has the record of the capitals for most shortened goals, and he was a five-time NHL All-Star. Together with Bondra, Olaf Kolzig was highly regarded after winning both the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy from 1994 and MVP of the AHL play -offs and the HAP HAP Holmes Memorial Award 1994 for the lowest gaa. He and Bondra helped reach the capitals of the Stanley Cup final of 1998, was a dual NHL All-Star and earned the 2000 Vezina trophy.

Today’s article is not about these two men, but what these men wore when they established many of their awards. As can be seen in the image above, the two Bobbleheads have the famous “screaming eagle” sweaters of Washington that Team wore from 1995-2007 In some form despite the recoil from the fan to the sweaters and the color scheme. As a penguins fan, those sweaters always remind me of the Jaromir Jagr -trade, so I also keep some contempt for them.

The reason I raise these sweaters is that the Washington Capitals have unveiled their new alternative sweater for the 2025-26 season, and it certainly has a familiar feeling because the screaming eagle is back.

If you wonder, this is the fourth different sweater that the capitals have worn with the screaming eagle, but it is the first to leave the angular striping along the bottom of the sweater. I am not saying that this sweater is better or worse for that aspect – there we come up in a second – but there can be some capitals fans who can add a fourth “screaming eagle” jersey to their cupboards. Yes, those are definitely three sweaters too much.

The 1995-07 version of the sweater was the original, and it still stands as the best of all in my opinion. I know that there are capitals fans who demand that the team is only red-white-and-blue because of their geographical location, but that original “Screaming Eagle” jersey and his funky font have a special place in the history of capitals.

The second iteration of the screaming eagle saw the capitals bear red and navy Their 2021 reverse retro jerseyand the third variation of the screaming eagle saw them wear black on the 2022-23 Reverse Retro Jerseys. Black sweaters are lazy and I am not a fan of the stadium series Red-and-Navy colors, so the two inverted retro’s fall under the original “Screaming Eagle” jersey in my assessment system.

I am completely against the ruins of the “C” of the “C” of the captain and the Jersey advertisement on the right wrist, so that drops the score of this sweater. The logo does not have to be at the front of the sweater; It can rather be located on the shoulder. The capitals have decided that the Capitol logo should go there, so the mess on that right breast will be there when these sweaters are worn. That’s terrible.

If the capitals had used their original colorsThese sweaters would be a good mix between two eras of hockey in Washington. The darker red and navy blue are in force since the Reebok acquisition in 2007And I don’t understand why the capitals keep going back. For a team that continues to exchange colors on sweaters, it might be time to establish a schedule and stick to it. I prefer the original colors.

If you stay at home counting, the capitals start their 51st season as an NHL team this year. During sixteen of those years, the team has supported a variation of the “screaming eagle” sweater, including twelve where it was their primary logo. As a non-hockey person said to me when I showed them this sweater: “The Eagles look good, I think”, what a smile of me because they are the capitals, not the Eagles. I only see this as a problem for casual hockey fans.

The biggest problem that strikes me is that this sweater is now the fourth alternative sweater that the team has worn since 2020. In 2019-20 Original Capitals Throwback. From 2020-24, she Wore the “W” sweater Based on their 2015 Winter Classic Jersey. Last season they have the 2022-23 Reverse Retro Jerseys To alternate the status, and this season she will see the new “Screaming Eagle” sweater in red. I know that Ted Leonsis does not hurt money, so having four different alternative sweaters in six years is completely ridiculous.

Capitals fans will most likely disagree with me, but this sweater is superfluous and is aesthetically poor. At some point I would like to see a red-white-blue Capitol Building Jersey, but I feel that I will state that the capitals will only give a different idea for a new alternative sweater next season. For the many reasons mentioned above, this sweater was simply not necessary, but the capitals will try to sell a few more sweaters to fans who simply cannot have enough.

You would think they would get the message after the first three variations of the “screaming eagle” sweater, but I think the fourth time is a charm? Anyway, it might be time to let the screaming eagle find a nest.

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
