Ipswich Town sit fourth in the Championship table as they recover from a poor start. As the half-way point of the season approaches, ITFC are five points behind the top two after one defeat in their last nine league games.
Automatic promotion is the goal of the Tractor Boys. There is pressure Kieran McKenna and co to realize these ambitions, while aiming high for the future.
The Town boss received good support during the summer transfer window, but there is more money to spend. Expect the East Anglian side to be active in their bid to close the top two and strengthen their promotion charge.
Here we suggest three January transfer moves that could win Ipswich Town promotion…
Striker upgrade has landed
To be a promotion winner you have to be ruthless. This applies to both the transfer approach and to taking chances on the field.
Fortunately, Ipswich Town is a team that has multiple goal threats. However, to really get the promotion push under control, an upgrade of the striker would be a big step for ITFC.
George Hirst has a respectable six goals but is prone to going quite long periods without scoring, while Chuba Akpom struggles with form and form. Ivan Azon is a developmental advance. Signing a bona fide goalscorer who can come in and take the league by storm could be decisive for promotion.
Ipswich Town fringe players are leaving
To streamline the squad and keep it fresh and competitive, there are a handful of players who can move on. This will benefit both them and Ipswich Town as a whole.
The two clear candidates are Elkan Baggott and academy graduate Cameron Humphreys. Although they are both still well regarded within the Tractor Boys set-up, they are on the fringes of the senior team and need to play regularly at 23 and 22 respectively.
The interest is likely to arise at the top of League One, although it is not out of the question that Championship teams will also take a look.
Elkan Baggott and Cameron Humphreys stats 2025/26
| Player | Games | Goals | Assists |
| E. Baggott | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| C. Humphreys | 3 | 0 | 0 |
The midfield dilemma has been resolved
Last but not least there is the midfield department. Ipswich Town have some very talented players in this area, but it could be argued that another signing could really complete an impressive ITFC squad.
Marcelino Nunez obviously plays a little deeper, but has moved into a more advanced role in Sammie Szmodics’ absence. Perhaps an attacking midfielder is needed for some extra depth and to get the best out of Szmodics’ game again.
Alternatively, Nunez could be seen as a more permanent option in that role. If that’s the case, another central midfielder could be an upgrade to take Town to the next level.
