You could be forgiven for mistakenly thinking this house is a cellar door – because it once was.
The Krondorf estate in South Africa’s Barossa Valley used to be Kabminye Winery, but an extensive renovation has turned it into a trendy home.
Marty Powell and his partner Bruce have called the property at 210 Krondorf Rd home for the past twelve years, but that won’t last much longer as they have put it up for sale.
When they bought it, it was a working cellar door with a restaurant, art gallery and exhibition space.

The Krondorf estate was once a cellar door.
It has since been transformed into an impressive house.
It is a mix of modern and industrial while retaining some character features.
The main living areas offer beautiful views of the surrounding wine country through floor-to-ceiling windows.
“The unique architecture and location of the vineyard, along with the peace and quiet that comes with it, really attracted us,” Mr Powell said.
When they moved in, it still looked very much like a cellar door, so they often received hopeful visitors.
“People stopped looking for a wine tasting,” Powell said.
The couple have since converted the property into a four-bedroom house, with the work picking up speed during the Covid pandemic.
“A lot of people have been renovating during Covid, and that has definitely accelerated things for us,” Powell said.
“We went full speed ahead during that time – brand new bathrooms, ensuites, a new kitchen, all while working with the old bones of the place.
“It has quite an industrial character.”
During the modernization, the couple took the character of the home into account, so as not to let this be lost in the end product.
Spanning two floors, it has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and large living areas with floor-to-ceiling windows offering breathtaking views of the surrounding wine country.
They created a wine room in the center of the house to take advantage of the naturally cool conditions, while a rustic wood-fired oven can be used for both heating and cooking.

The main living space is open plan.
An upper floor can also be used as a living space, or in this case as a fitness room.
There are four bedrooms and two bathrooms throughout the house.
A central wine room is a striking feature.
“The setting is spectacular and we have really enjoyed the sunsets here and many an impromptu cocktail hour,” Mr Powell said.
They are selling them in preparation for retirement and to move closer to Adelaide.
“The search was difficult. We have had this space for so long, but we found a property with the same feel and less maintenance,” said Mr Powell.
“We are so happy with the work we have done here.”
He said the property would suit a wide range of buyers, including buyers with entrepreneurial ideas.
“A lot of hard work has gone into it. You can build a swimming pool and a shed in it,” Powell said.
“The infrastructure is there and someone can turn it into a home or even turn it into a business.”
Ray White Grange agent James Aubert is selling the house, which will go under the hammer on January 18 at 11am
