Former ATP star highlights the differences between Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero

About a month before the start of the Australian Open, Carlos Alcaraz announced his divorce from Juan Carlos Ferrero.

There’s no point in pointing out that this news left everyone speechless, as their partnership had lasted over seven years and the young Spanish champion had just played the best season of his entire career. The 22-year-old from Murcia won eight trophies in 2025 and finally found that regularity that had often been a weakness for him.

These results saw the six-time Grand Slam champion overtake Jannik Sinner at the top of the ATP rankings, also benefiting from the three-month ban imposed on his great rival by WADA. He has also improved his level in indoor conditions, as he reached the final of the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin after disappointing in the previous two editions.

Alcaraz starts a new chapter

It will be very interesting to understand what the impact of this separation will be on the future of Carlitos, who has always had an excellent relationship with ‘Juanki’ and has repeatedly defined him as a second father. The current world number 1 will conclude his preparation with Samuel Lopez and the latter will also follow him during the AO, before finding a replacement for Ferrero (destined to take a very long break before accepting a new project).

Interviewed by ‘El Larguero’, former Spanish champion Alex Corretja broke the silence on the most surprising news of recent months: “It is no secret that Ferrero’s philosophy did not always coincide with Carlos’. You can say that Juan Carlos’ approach was more similar to Sinner’s, but I don’t think he would ever become Sinner’s coach. I think Juanki needs time to reflect and appreciate the work done, which is objectively amazing.”

Ferrero began working with Carlitos shortly after the end of his partnership with Alexander Zverev, turning down several key offers to help Alcaraz grow. Some experts are confident that their cooperation can be resumed in the future.
