In recent years, the Australian great has done everything he can to add new elements to his game and become more terrifying for top players. Despite the improvements made, the feeling remains that he is missing something to really compete for the most important titles.
Rusedski about De Minaur’s playing
One of the aspects that Alex can definitely work on is his serve, which prevents him from getting enough quick points against rivals like Jannik Sinner and Carlitos Alcaraz. The two current leaders of men’s tennis have created a huge gap over the competition and have no plans to stop their run, having won the last eight Grand Slam titles and also facing each other in the final act of the ATP Finals.
During the first episode of his new podcast, former ATP great Greg Rusedski analyzed De Minaur’s game in detail: “I don’t think it’s going to be super technical with the forehand because it’s very difficult to change that. One thing he did a few years ago was change the string in his racket. He put natural guts in the crosses to give him a little more pop on his serve.”
Greg continued, “I think technically the area he’s going to work on is the serve. If you look at his serve, his elbow is a little low at times, so his consistency isn’t where it needs to be. That’s going to be the technical aspect. If he gets more pop on his serve this offseason and also gets more speed on his base shots, he’s one of those guys that you think might be able to make a move against Sinner and Alcaraz because he’s just as physically strong as those two.”
