Greg McElroy won the 2010 BCS National Championship as the quarterback of the Alabama Crimson Tide. He then played a few seasons in the NFL before hanging up his cleats.
Now, McElroy is one of ESPN’s top college football commentators and color analysts. He also has a handicap of 4.7 and dreams of becoming even better. McElroy was a guest on the latest episode of GOLFs Substandard podcast and discussed his golf game and goals with co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz.
Like many elite athletes, McElroy has moments when he thinks he could be good at golf. But like many others, the game quickly humbles him.
“I have moments where I think, ‘I could be good,’” McElroy said. “And then I have a quick memory of pulling something, making a three-putt or a putt from the green, and I’m thinking, ‘I’m never going to be any good.’ I’m about at the point now where I’m probably as good as I’ll ever be, even though I still harbor ambitions of being a plus handicapper. I don’t think I’ll ever get there; I’m too stubborn. But at some point I would like to make that goal a reality.”

McElroy currently works with top swing coach Mark Blackburn, but admits the famed instructor understands the former signal caller has a simplistic view of the game.
“He’ll say, ‘load the club Greg, fire him,’” McElroy said. “And I’m like, ‘I don’t know what that means.’ And he says, ’45, 46 degrees, Greg.’ Like Mark, just let me swing hard. And he’s finally gotten to the point where he thinks this guy has no idea what he’s doing. He’s going to swing hard. He’ll be an idiot about it. He’s strong, so we’ll figure it out. He has decent speed, but he probably won’t know where he’s going. So when it comes to club face control, so overrated in my opinion. Just, see ball, hit ball. That’s it all about.”
