Ford cracked fuel injector recall closes investigation

The federal investigation was closed after Ford agreed to replace all fuel injectors in certain models.

– A federal investigation into cracked Ford fuel injectors has been closed about 18 months after it opened.

In April 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the repairs made during the November 2022 and April 2024 recall of Ford fuel injectors.

The recalled vehicles included 2020-2022 Ford Escapes and 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sports equipped with 1.5-liter engines.

According to the recall, the high-pressure fuel injectors can burst, allowing fuel vapors and fuel to leak onto hot engine parts, causing a fire in the engine compartment.

Ford dealers were told to update engine control software designed to detect a pressure drop in the fuel rails, provide instrument panel messages to drivers, reduce engine power and lower the temperatures of potential ignition sources in the engine compartments.

Ford dealers also installed pipes in the cylinder head drain holes to direct spilled liquid fuel across the various hot surfaces in the engine compartment and deliver the liquid fuel onto the roadways.

But NHTSA had problems with the repairs, namely because the fuel injectors were not repaired or replaced.

Ford and safety authorities have worked extensively together to create a better solution for the cracked fuel injectors. But then in March 2025, Ford determined that repairs had not been completed on approximately 34,000 recalled vehicles. Ford dealers registered the vehicles as repaired when this was not the case.

This prompted Ford to announce a recall for those vehicles, after which Ford decided to issue another cracked fuel injector recall to replace all injectors.

NHTSA has completed its investigation based on Ford’s new recall fixes.
