For the first time this season, a new player has been added to the Suns injury report

The Phoenix Suns have started the season 1-2 and their next game is a great opportunity to get back to .500 early in the campaign. The Utah Jazz are wrapping up a three-game road trip that has included losses to both the LA Clippers and Denver Nuggets so far. Despite these losses – and the concerning lack of defense during both – there are ways the Suns can improve quickly.

Injuries didn’t help either, as Jalen Green had yet to appear and center Mark Williams already couldn’t play back-to-back. The Suns issued an injury update ahead of Monday’s visit to Utah and there was some good news in the form of Williams not appearing, meaning he will be active.

Dillon Brooks doubts right groin pain.

Unfortunately, that’s where the good vibes end as Dillon Brooks is questionable for the game with right groin soreness. It’s a shame considering how hard he’s played and how quickly he’s joined the organization, though perhaps it’s still a blessing in disguise. Before we delve into why that might be, it’s also confirmed that Green is out of the closet as well.

This is disappointing because Green has made the journey with the team and the hope had always been that he would be good for it. The fact that he isn’t means we still don’t really know when we’ll see him there, a situation made worse by the fact he hasn’t missed a game in the two full seasons leading up to this one.

Back to Brooks, and perhaps this is an opportunity for Devin Booker to take over offensively once again. He has started the season with just 15 shots per game – the lowest since his rookie year – while Brooks has almost 20. That’s not the kind of shot distribution you want when you’re head coach Jordan Ott, and perhaps Brooks’ absence could be exactly what Booker needs.

It would have been even better to see Booker and Green there without Brooks, if only to experiment with different lineups. The Suns can’t have all three guys plus Grayson Allen – which is a problem for him going forward – while Williams has also yet to start a game but would be the ideal big man for that group.

Maybe Brooks will be ready by the time the teams take the field, but this is yet another setback for the Suns early on. For all his offensive mistakes, Brooks helped change the culture in Phoenix immediately. Having him against an opponent the Suns can beat isn’t ideal, but it is a setback they will have to overcome.
