Collingwood veteran Jeremy Howe has opened himself over the shocking aftermath of a devastating injury that took so many medicines that he could not pick up his son.
How did three separate breaks suffered in his arm after he landed awkward during the round-one collision of the cakes with Geelong in 2023, the pain of which described as ‘as a bladder to my arm’.
And that was just the start of his problems.
The surgery on the injury did not go according to plan and he had to return to the hospital to treat an infection in the same arm, so that he eventually got offside for four months.
“It was the pills and the painkillers that brought me the most,” said Howe Unfiltered with Hamish Mclachlan.
‘I have taken anti-inflams and I have taken pain relief to make it around by games is probably not ideal, but it is generally what I have done.

‘Taking so many antibiotics, painkillers, all at the same time, for a large period, 11 days in a row.
“I was in such a haze that I had no emotion. I didn’t know what I was doing. (My wife) Kahlia would bring in (our son) and I couldn’t pick him up, I was not allowed to touch him.
‘I interrogated everything – is this really worth it, is this what I want to be at 32? I am not even able to pick up my son.
“If I can’t be a husband and I can’t be a father, Footy is just parked and that is really when I thought I would delete it.”
Howe, who compared the trauma with his brutal arm injury to that of a car accident, says he still has nerve damage.
“I have no feeling in my thumb,” he said.
“I don’t know when that will come back.”
How long after his accident, how about a dozen antibiotics was held, so that the infection did not return, and that caused his own problems.

“I took so many antibiotics and the power of what they were, my intestine started to erode from the inside and eventually had to go back to the hospital and get more pills to fight what the other antibiotics are still doing while I still play,” he said.
“I asked myself, is this really worth doing this? I don’t want to be 40 and suddenly my intestines have disappeared. Cooked.
‘I managed to weat myself from the antibiotics … It was stop playing and removing the metal or removing the antibiotics and praying that the infection never returned.
‘So we just stopped the antibiotics … and the (the infection) never returned.
“I got rid of them and it immediately gave me a better feeling. And I managed to win a flag at the end of the year. ‘
In March 2025, the Footy star and his wife welcomed their second child only 24 hours before the season opener of the Magpies against GWS.
The delighted couple shared the news that three -year -old Son Zander now has a baby brother named Saxon.
