Flyers admit big plans for 2026 free agency have been thwarted by early signings

Philadelphia Flyers President of Hockey Operations Keith Jones recently said in an interview that some of the targets the Flyers wanted to pursue in 2026 have been signed and are no longer available. As a result, the way the organization completes its team will change.

Jones was asked if the fact that a once-vibrant free-agency class is now running out of available difference-makers has ruined the Flyers’ plans. Since all those guys have re-signed, he was asked if the Flyers have had to make any adjustments. Is the class not as strong as you hoped?

Jones responded”I think some adjustments had to be made by all teams.”

He added:

“I think a lot of people didn’t expect the cap to go up and they were told that the cap was going to go up over the next two or three years with a dollar amount attached to it, which again forced the team to, you know, re-sign their own guys and get ahead of the curve, where they might have been caught out by not having enough cap space if it had stayed flat. I think you would have seen more reach and we would have had some cap space to use on those players and bid for their services.”

He then noted that the amounts offered to these players and the security they received made it difficult to reject these contract offers. “So yeah, the landscape changed overnight and it would have been impossible to anticipate unless you looked inward and realized that for three years you knew the cap was going to increase by the number of dollars.”

There was some disappointment. I don’t think we are alone in this. I think there were a lot of teams that we bid against to get the services of some of those players. You have to reset and refocus, find different ways to make your team better.

Jones went on to say that trades, free agency, offer sheets and anything within the rules are avenues the Flyers will explore.
