Another division I school is the pursuit of the addition of women’s flag football.
In a letter to the campus community Published on FridayCal Poly Athletic Director Don Oberhelman said that the school could add women’s flag football as a Varsity sport in 2027.
Cal Poly is the sixth division I -school at NCAA level to announce the intentions to start a football team of a women’s flag. The members of the Big West follow Alabama State, Long Island, Mercyhurst, Mount St. Mary’s and Ut Arlington.
In February, Flag Football took a considerable step to gain ground in the university ranks when the NCAA recommended to add it to its emerging Sports for Women program. If flag football gets the status in the program on the NCAA convention of 2026, there may be a way to go before fans see something like a NCAA tournament for the sport.
Nevertheless, the interest in the Olympic Games at the Olympic Games at the Olympic Games in 2028 in Los Angeles seems.
Nebraska Ad Troy Dannen said that people have to keep “a closely close” on the flag football of ladies after organizing an exhibition match at the Husker Games in April. Last month, ACC commissioner Jim Phillips told SB Nation that the conference “looks” what happens in flag football and the conference has had “a few provisional conversations” about the sport.
On May 9, 2024, in an e -mail obtained by SB Nation through an open record request, NCAA Senior Vice -President Felicia Martin wrote to Division I Athletic Directors: “The combination of the Olympic recognition of flag football and the growing popularity among youth and secondary school players has raised his pregnancy as one of the NCAA -pastly paste -pastly past association.” The e -mail contained statistics about the growth of the sport and links to videos and a learning portal.
When announcing the addition of flag football at Cal Poly, Oberhelman wrote that he hopes to invest in the sport and build a program quickly, enable it to “start a legacy of success”, in the same way as the Mustangs in Strandvolleyball “that continues to pay dividends.” Beach Volleyball is a sport that also grew from the Emerging Sports for Women program of the NCAA and now has a championship status. The Mustangs have been to five ADA tournaments for beach volleyball and were implemented to the national semi -final in each of the last two years.
Cal Poly also elevates his stunt program from Clubstatus to a Varsity sport.
“Both additions are part of the university’s long-term planning to increase the opportunities for female student athletes,” wrote Oberhelman. “This is especially important because Cal Poly’s female student population has increased from 42 percent of the registration to 51 percent in the last 12 years.”
Although only a handful of division I have added women’s football schools, there have much more at Division II and III levels.
Last season, the Division III America East held a full season of Varsity of Ladies Flag football with a conference championship and became the first NCAA competition that does this. Jacqie McWilliams-Parker Commissioner of the CIAA, the Division II HBCU conference-contested SB Nation that she hopes to have flag football as a Varsity sport in the competition during the Academic Year of 2026-27.
