Liverpool took a big step towards the last 16 of the Champions League with a 3-0 win at the Stade Velodrome as goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, an own goal from Geronimo Rulli and Cody Gakpo’s late try sealed their success in France.
The win moved the Reds up to fourth in the UCL table and within reach of an automatic place in the last 16.
Slot was pleased to see his side bounce back from a frustrating run of league matches as he extended their unbeaten run to 13 games in all competitions.
The Dutchman had particular praise for Joe Gomez as the centre-back shone in a rare start. Gomez has started just seven times in all competitions this season but has excelled in the absence of Ibrahima Konate.
“The one I want to get out [and highlight] is Joe Gomez, because he hasn’t played much in the past year and a half,” said Slot.
“He sometimes suffered from injuries, sometimes I didn’t play against him when he was fit. A few times when he played there were moments in [the] League Cup and FA Cup.
“Tonight he had an excellent performance and played an important role in our 3-0.”
