Final electoral rolls delayed in 9 states, UTs; Puducherry, Lakshadweep Publish

Nine states and three Union Territories have missed the original deadline for publishing their final electoral rolls as part of the ongoing special intensive revision of the electoral roll.

However, the Union Territories of Lakshdweep and Puducherry came out with their final rolls on Saturday as part of the Election Commission’s ambitious phase two of clearing the electoral rolls.

According to the Chief Electoral Officer of Puducherry, the Union Territory has 9,44,211 voters in the final electoral roll.

Lakshadweep has 57,607 voters, according to the final electoral roll.

The second phase of the special intensive review, announced on October 27 last year, covers a combined electorate of nearly 51 crore in these states and Union Territories.

The exercise would conclude on February 7 with the publication of the final electoral rolls.

Though the deadline was missed, Lakshdweep and Puducherry came out with their respective electoral rolls on Saturday.

Rajasthan was also expected to declare the final results on Saturday and the poll authority has extended the publication date to February 21.

European Commission officials said several reasons such as poor implementation of the program by the state’s chief election officials, mismanagement by grassroots level officials, political intervention and issues reaching the Supreme Court have led to the scheme going haywire.

As per the latest schedule, the last rolls of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat will be released on February 17, while Andaman, Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Goa will have their last rolls on February 21.

The final voting list of Madhya Pradesh will be released on February 23. The final electoral list of West Bengal will be released on February 28, while that of Uttar Pradesh will be published on April 10.

In addition, a special revision of the electoral rolls in Assam was completed on February 10.
