The FIFA World Cup is still eight months away, but thoughts are already turning to which teams could win in 2026 as more teams qualify.
We know the identities of 28 of the 48 participating teams, and we have a fair idea who will join them, especially in Europe, where most of the top guns are about to book their ticket to North America.
We’ve looked at what the bookmakers are saying about who the most likely winners are in this takedown.
It will come as no surprise to almost anyone that Spain are the first leaders after their victory at the 2024 European Championship. They are currently on a four-match winning streak, although they lost the UEFA Nations League final on penalties to Portugal earlier this year.
The team they beat in a nine-goal thriller in the semi-finals of that competition, France, are second favorites at 9/2. They still have arguably the best pound-for-pound squad in international football, and it would be no surprise if they reached a World Cup final for the third time in a row.
In third place is England, who are finally looking to cross the finish line in a major tournament after coming so close under Gareth Southgate. Could Thomas Tuchel be the man to get them over the line?
Brazil are considered the fourth most likely team to lift the trophy. It would be the culmination of an illustrious career for Carlo Ancelotti if he managed to lead them to a crowning moment in their history, but the Seleção have flattered themselves to deceive on the world stage in recent years.
It may be surprising that they are ahead of Argentina in terms of chances, despite the latter having dominated South America for the past five years. Brazil were on the receiving end of a 4-1 draw in March this year and have not beaten their rivals since 2019.
Despite a wealth of talent in Roberto Martinez’s squad, Portugal are only sixth favorites to win the World Cup for the first time ever. Cristiano Ronaldo will be 41 years old by the time the tournament starts; This will certainly be his last chance to complete the trophy run before retirement, but will his lack of mobility hinder the side on the business side of the competition?
Germany and the Netherlands, meanwhile, are regarded as relative outsiders going all the way, while Norway and the free-scoring Erling Haaland are at 150/1, which will provide an unlikely surprise next summer.
