Although many cities in the US have announced Vision Zero plans, the FBI and even local governments have never really given the safety of pedestrians. If you are in a car, you are important and worthwhile to look after, but the moment you get out of a car, your life no longer matters. If they give up, the US would not be the only developed country in the world where the roads become more dangerous instead of less. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration should implement new rules to at least pretend they give, but that is now delayed, Reuters -reports.
The original plan of NHTSA was to update its rules for achieving a five-star security assessment, including requiring blind spot monitoring and intervention, lane assistance and pedestrians who detect automated emergency brakes. The AEB requirement should also come into effect this month for the 2026 model year. It would not have been illegal to sell a vehicle without those functions, but they would not have qualified for a five -star rating. On Friday, however, Nhtsa said that it was planning to postpone the new rules until 2027, at the request of car manufacturers.
And although you may assume that the car manufacturers in question just don’t want to be forced to make their cars safer, that is not really the case. At least reportedly. Instead, it is because the NHTSA of the Trump never came close to publish the test procedure for pedestrian crash that the car manufacturers should have known to certify that their cars met the proposed requirements. It is quite possible that only an excuse is, but it is usually also useful to view the section before you write your paper.
A clear pattern
That said, the companies also asked the Trump administration to change the requirement that new passenger vehicles include AEB systems that are able to detect an approaching crash by 2029 and to stop a vehicle with speeds up to 62 MPH, saying that it is not realistic. A few weeks ago, Nhtsa said that it was planning to give automakers another two years to “have more time to achieve challenging aspects of the standard.”
Perhaps NHTSA really intends to go through it in the end, but given the hostility of the Trump administration compared to the regulations in general and especially pedestrian safety, it would not be surprising to see Nhtsa kicking it can kick it back on the road or completely delete its new safety rule. After all, the Trump government has made it clear that if you are not in a car, your life and well-being do not matter.
For example, Bloomberg has just reported That the Trump administration has canceled subsidies that would have been used to make streets safer, add pedestrian track and to implement cycle jobs throughout the country. All because cars are their top priority. One project in San Diego was canceled because it seems to be “the lane capacity and a road diet that is hostile to motor vehicles”, while a fairfield, Alabama project was also called “hostile” for cars and “in contrast to DOT’s priority of retaining or raising roadmapacity.” In the meantime, a project in Boston has been canceled because improving safety can hinder vehicle capacity and speed. “
These are also not new subsidies. The Trump administration is after money that was awarded years ago – an albuquerque -subsidy was allocated in 2022 – all with the aim of ensuring that no driver is ever somewhat uncomfortable by local authorities who try to prevent people from killing. Beautiful.
