Scottie Scheffler, who last month the Claret Jug Hijhist at Royal Portrush, brought a close to the most important championship season of 2025. Cameron Young achieved his very first Touro Windings on the Wyndham Championship last week and put an end to the regular season of PGA Tour. And now we start the late season, the FedEx Cup -Play -offs and the pursuit of the FedEx Cup.
The top 70 players in FedEx Cup points are eligible for Tournament No. 1 at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn., For the FedEx St. Jude Championship, but only 69 are in the field this week because Rory Mcilroy has decided to skip this event. This is a no-cut tournament and when it covers dust on Sunday, the top 50 players in Fedex Cup points will not only continue next week to Round Two in Caves Valley for the BMW championship, but those 50 players are also qualified for any characteristic event in the PGA tour season 2026.
TPC Southwind has been a supporting pillar on the Tour schedule for more than 35 years. This will be the fourth consecutive year that it serves as the host location for round one of the FedEx Cup -Play -offs. The par 70 that extends to more than 7,200 meters was designed by Ron Pritchard with player consultation from Fuzzy Zoerer and Hubert Green. Not exactly well -known names for the golf design, but their work here in Memphis has received some of the highest praise from a course on the Tour schedule. The players really love this golf course. There are 11 water hazards, many doglegs, it is narrow of the T -shirt and the BermuDagrass greens are smaller than average goals.
2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship Odds: Scottie Scheffler Big Favorite in Playoff Opener
By means of:
Kevin Cunningham
Accuracy of the T -shirt is more important than distance here and with the small greens it is extremely important in regulation – as clambers when approach shots do not touch the well surface. In total I looked at the strokes won: the ball that stood out this week, won strokes: approaching, good drives won, gir won, clambering, par 4 scoring (450-500 yards), and gap proximity of 150-175 meters, because this is the distance for which the majority of closer shots are being beaten. I also looked at the obtained strokes: fast, bermudagrass greens.
I feel that the correlated courses are fairly strong this week. We have many similarities with other golf courses and also crossover success in comparing leaderboards. Pebble Beach is known for its very small greens, with premiums on Gir and Klauteren. Waialae Country Club (Sony Open) and Sea Island (RSM Classic) are based on Bermudagrass-based, accuracy-driven par-70 courses. Innisbrook, the home of the Valspar Championship, is a similar Scot-in Golf Test of Golf and a track that matches TPC Southwind. Finally, I see many of the same skills needed for success at both Hamilton and St. George’s Golf & Country Club, recent hosts of the RBC Canadian Open.
We landed correctly on Hideki Matsuyama in this column last season. Let’s see if we too can successfully defend our title.
Matt Fitzpatrick (28-1)
The Englishman is currently 12th in the Ryder Cup classification for the European team. He will have to continue his excellent game that this summer took place here in Memphis, from four consecutive top 10 Finishes and five in his last eight starts. He has been so high here in the past and at the Valspar and is sixth on Pebble Beach. He is doing everything well and the last 24 rounds, is in 12th place in this area for Greens in Regulation, 13th for good drives, 14th in Klauteren and 11th on the 450-500 Yard Par 4S.
Ben Griffin (40-1)
Just like Fitzpatrick, Griffin has the ball striking and scrambling is currently debit. He has been one of the most popular players in the game for the past three months and finally missed successive cuts on the John Deere Classic and the Open Championship, but he came back well last week with a 11th place in the Wyndham. Griffin finished in second place in Hamilton Golf & Country Club in the Canadian Open 2024, never missed a cut at the Sony Open and also has a top 10 finish on Sea Island.
Harris English (45-1)
English plays golf all season, wins at Torrey Pines and finished twice in the second place of Scottie Scheffler on the PGA and Open Championships. He is long and directly from the tee and has a magical short game. He has four top 10 finishes at the Sony Open, two at the Valspar and one at the RSM classic. I expect a good week from the man who holds on to the sixth and final automatic place in the rankings of the US Ryder Cup team.

Maverick McNealy (50-1)
It was only a few months shy of a year ago that McNealy achieved his very first PGA Tour victory at the RSM classic. He also had a great success at Pebble Beach, the Sony Open, finished seventh in Hamilton in Canada in 2024 and ended here in Memphis last season. This season McNealy has cut into every large championship and has recorded four Top-5 Finishes. I expect he will play well again this week.
JJ Spaun (50-1)
It was a life -changing season for Spaun and it all started at the Sony Open in Hawaii when he finished third. He is a best ball attack that is accurate from the tee, is a solid scrambler and in the last 24 rounds in 20th place in this area on the 450-500 Yard Par 4S and 21st for SG: putting (fast Bermudagrass).
Nick Taylor (90-1)
Taylor has found the circle of the winner on a few of our correlated courses, gets the top of the highest awards on Pebble Beach in 2020 and won the Sony Open just earlier this season. Before missing the cut a few weeks ago on the Open Championship, Taylor was at one point and finished 4-13-23-17-22 in his earlier five starts. Accuracy of the tee, greens in regulation and the 450-500 par 4s are some of his strongest suits and he is also equipped with a very solid short game.
