February 2007 was a memorable month for Bruce and Peter

Victorian breeders Bruce Paul and Peter Watkinson are offering an athletic filly by Captain Crunch out of Sahara Sunrise, Lot 142, at the Melbourne Australian Pacing Gold Sale on February 15.

Their ‘Sahara’ family began in February 2007 when Bruce and Peter were the successful bidders for a Village Jasper-Mabrandra filly at the APG Yearling Sales in Melbourne.

They spent just $11,000 to buy her from well-known seller Ross Gange. She was later named Sahara Miss and collected $66,463 on the track, winning 13 times. Her best win came at Melton on September 2, 2011, when piloted by the late and great Greg Sugars.

Sahara Miss has been an absolute gem in breeding, producing eight foals, seven of which have won a total of $961,325 (until January 20, 2026).

So when you add the $66,463 in prize money won to that total, Sahara Miss is a million dollar mare. That’s an investment with a silver lining for just $11,000!

Sahara Miss’s first foal is the Art Major bitch named Sahara Sunrise and it is her fifth foal by Captain Crunch that is offered as Lot 142 at Oaklands Junction on February 15.

Sahara Sunrise’s first three foals have won 18 races and earned more than $175,000 combined. The fourth foal Sahara Seakret made three starts in 2025 as a late two-year-old, resulting in one win and two second places.

Lot 142 is being prepared for sale by Abby Sanderson in Murchison in northern Victoria.

“This filly is improving by leaps and bounds. She is so beautifully mannered and I am very happy with everything about her,” said Abby.

“We have had a few horses from this family in our stables and Sahara Tiger (a full brother of the mother of Lot 142) is my favorite horse of all time.”

The filly loses nothing to her father, Captain Crunch, the 2018 USTA 2YO Pacing Colt of the Year.

His oldest descendants in Australia are just starting their four-year career. He has produced 73 Australian-bred winners from his first two crops and seven of the ten richest offspring to have raced to date are fillies.

Only 29 pacing fillies have been cataloged for the Melbourne sale and they are eligible for the $100,000 2YO APG Sales race in 2027.

So find your way to B Barn during the Sales Weekend for a good inspection Lot 142.
