FC Barcelona has responded to the continued interest in midfielder Fermin Lopez by discussing a contract extension with his agents according to SPORT and are transfer market expert Carlos Montfortthe latter of whom quoted anonymous sources on his popular X account.
Fermin was on the verge of leaving his boyhood club in the summer when Premier League giants Chelsea were keen to acquire his services.
Ultimately, however, head coach Hansi Flick reportedly put his foot down and blocked the move, which turned out to be a stroke of genius, amid the feeling that the club’s senior players would never have been forgiven if they had let him go.
Although he suffered from injuries earlier in the season, Fermin is arguably Barcelona’s star player in the ongoing 2025/2026 season.
This week he was the deserved MVP of a Champions League match against Slavia Prague, sealing the gong with a rapid-fire brace after Barca had hammered home an early goal in the Czech capital.
Given his achievements, it is no wonder rival clubs remain interested in the Andalusian.
In response, Barca reportedly met with the agents of 22-year-old Xavier Gimenez and Joshua Barnett in the January transfer window, the day after his exploits on the continent.
FC Barcelona wants to extend Fermin again
The CAM only recently extended his contract until 2029 on Halloween 2024, but Barca want to extend him for another two years.
The salary of a player who will almost certainly go to the World Cup with Spain will also be improved, as Barça wants to protect a key figure who it believes is a cornerstone of the club’s sporting project for the medium and long term, alongside the likes of Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Pau Cubasri.
Given Pedri’s injury and his strong form, Fermin is guaranteed to play for FC Barcelona against Real Oviedo at the Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday. The first match saw Flick’s men play for Culers in the space of five weeks, amid a series of road trips and a successful retention of the Spanish Super Cup at the expense of Real Madrid in Saudi Arabia.
