FC Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski said he was ‘proud’ of the first goal at the new Camp Nou, which was the opener in a 4-0 defeat of Athletic Club in La Liga.
Ferran Torres scored a brace while Fermin Lopez got on the scoresheet amid some fantastic assists from Lamine Yamal.
But ultimately it is Lewandowski who will look back into the history books and boast that he was the first to put the ball in the back of the net in the renovated, half-built stadium, which had not seen a competitive match since May 2023.
“We returned to Camp Nou and for us it was a special day. We are very happy to be able to play here,” said Lewandowski told DAZN after the match.
“From the start we played very well, we scored two goals in the first half and two more in the second. We added three more points,” the Pole pointed out, stressing that the most important thing for Hansi Flick’s men is “that we are back here”, because “it is something different when we play here”.
Barca were clearly aggressive in their approach to the match, with Lewandowski revealing that “we had it in our heads that we had to attack from the start”, making it “special” that he was the first off the goal line after four minutes.
“I am very proud. We have a very good team and we have to look ahead now. When we play at Camp Nou we will be a slightly stronger team,” he claimed.
Lewandowski is on fire for FC Barcelona
Lewandowski has been injured for much of what has already been played in the 2025/2026 season and has returned to top form with four goals in his last two games. In his previous appearance before that, he scored a hat-trick at Celta Vigo.
“I’m 37 years old, but for me it was a special day. To be able to play here again… To score a goal, in the end it was four goals and I think we can play every match here just like today or better,” he noted.
FC Barcelona and Lewandowski will now hit the road, with Tuesday’s mouthwatering match against Chelsea in the Champions League considered a must-win thanks to both teams’ position at the stage of the competition.
