Fan Zhendong continues to dominate the Chinese Super League

The China Table Tennis Super League (CTTSL) is full of elitental talent, and at the moment Fan Zhendong and his Shanghai Zhongxing team are on top of the competition. Many had expected some slowness from the defensive Olympic champion, but he has won seven straight matches, including two separate victories over World No. 1 Lin Shidong (most recently a 3-0 dominant victory).

The fan team is Shanghai Zhongxing. Although Fan has been dominant, the team had mixed results. Yet they seem to float around third position – possibly a chance to reach the play -offs.

Fan remains Shanghai Zhongxing through the next phase of the CTTSL Leiden before he goes to Germany to compete for Saarbrücken in the Bundesliga. If someone wondered if he would be at his best, he has already shown that he is a challenge. The real question for China can be or should push Fan Zhendong back to the national team. Historically, if one withdraws from the national team, there is no path back. But then Fan Zhendong is not a typical player – and his results speak for themselves. Fan Zhendong is the biggest name in the Shanghai Zhongxing team, he is the biggest story in both the Chinese CTTSL and the German TTBL. Perhaps in 2026 the return of fan to the world stage will be one of the big stories on the professional tour.
