Judge Jon W. Setzer awarded the victim’s family $16 million for pain and suffering and $36 million for wrongful death.

A jury in Georgia awarded $52 million in damages to the family of Doris Jordan, a woman who died after undergoing a cosmetic procedure called a Brazilian butt lift (BBL). However, her family will most likely receive none of the money.

On December 9, the jury returned its verdict in Gwinnett County Superior Court. Judge Jon W. Setzer awarded the victim’s family $16 million for pain and suffering and $36 million for wrongful death, KBTX reported. The verdict stems from a December 2019 surgery performed at Sei Bello, a cosmetic surgery clinic in Lawrenceville.

Jordan was a nurse, an Army veteran and a mother of three. She died a day after the procedure. In court testimony, the mother’s cause of death was detailed as brain damage caused by lack of oxygen during surgery.

Moses Kim, a lawyer for the family, said Jordan’s oxygen supply had been compromised there was no oxygen source throughout the building. Employees were unaware that she was without oxygen during the entire operation.

“Miss Jordan was not breathing, and when they went to check if she was getting oxygen through the tubes in her nose, they drained the line and realized the end of the plastic tube was not connected to oxygen because there was no oxygen in the facility,” Kim said.

Kim said employees who were there at the time did not call 911 for about 19 minutes after determining Jordan had no pulse and was not breathing. He claims the clinic engaged in malpractice before, during and after the procedure.

Jordan’s husband, James Jordan, says that is the family probably won’t recover most of the ruling because the clinic was uninsured at the time of the procedure. However, the price is the least of his worries.

“I want my wife back,” said James Jordan, Doris’ husband Atlanta News First. “The money does not compensate for what she has done for me and our family.”

You are beautiful dissolved in 2020, according to the website of the Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs. John Holmes, the registered owner, failed to comply with registration and compensation requirements. The doctor involved in Jordan’s care, Kanye Willis, has reached an out-of-court settlement with the family and remains licensed to practice in the state of Georgia.

The family said the lawsuit was intended to determine liability for Doris Jordan’s death and raise awareness about disreputable clinics.

“I just hope people understand this and look at it seriously because these pop-up clinics are not all they appear to be,” James Jordan said.
