Fall from grace Bolton Wanderers man should seek fresh start in January: Opinion News: The72 – Football League News

Joel Randall has failed to find form at Bolton Wanderers and with stiff competition in his position he could be looking for a move in January.

In January 2025, Joel Randall joined Bolton Wanderers in a major money transfer from Peterborough United, in a move designed to help then manager Ian Evatt keep his job. Unfortunately, before Randall could be truly integrated, Evatt would part ways with BWFC.

Since the appointment of Steven SchumacherThe attacking midfielder has seen a series of hard-top games, with the Trotters boss often rotating in that area or opting for a more physical option.

The likes of Marcus Forss, Kyle Dempsey, John McAtee and Aaron Morley are all viable options in the 26-year-old’s position, making this the busiest area in the squad. While no one has excelled in attacking midfield, it is Randall who has looked the weakest in other areas of his game.

The combination of competition, in line with the fact that Randall has never really found his feet in a Bolton Wanderers shirt, means that now may be the best time for all parties to find a new, temporary or permanent home for the playmaker.

Joel Randall’s League One family tree

Things haven’t always been this hard for Randall. After starting his career relatively quietly at Exeter City, the 26-year-old really started to show his talent at Peterborough United. The midfielder started slowly, but had two top seasons at the club.

In 2023/24, Randall had his best season in League One, scoring ten times in addition to seven assists. The midfielder would follow up the following season, scoring five times and assisting twice before earning his move to Bolton Wanderers.

Unfortunately, things have yet to work out for the midfielder, who has scored just four goals for BWFC since moving north. Schumacher is known to rate Randall’s quality on the ball, but whether there is a real place for the player in his promotion-chasing side remains to be seen.

Where could Randall go if a Bolton Wanderers exit awaits?

For Randall, a move should suit all parties. The 26-year-old has cost Bolton Wanderers around seven figures and has two and a half years left on his contract. So it’s hard to imagine them letting him leave on a permanent deal in January unless a serious offer comes in.

What is more likely is a move that either includes an option to buy or leaves the door open for a return if the midfielder finds form.

While Randall could easily be placed in the category of a luxury player, there is certainly a market for him in League One given his previous performances for Peterborough United in the division.

The likes of Reading, Leyton Orient and former club Exeter City are all playing in formations that suit Randall and are looking to improve their current season. The market for the midfielder is there and while contractually it would be difficult to make a permanent move, a change of scenery could be beneficial for all parties and see Randall back to his best.
