Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the situation between Manchester United and Gareth Southgate as the club prepare to start their search for a new permanent manager.
United in the market for new boss
After sacking Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge, United confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as interim coach earlier this week.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also considered for the temporary role, but the club opted to continue with Carrick, who is set to appear in the dugout for Saturday’s derby encounter with Manchester City.
United looked at the situation carefully and opted for an interim manager, with the decision on a permanent appointment postponed until the summer. Some of the names mentioned include Enzo Maresca, Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, Julian Nagelsmann, Roberto De Zerbi and Southgate.
Since INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe took over operational control of the club, Southgate has been continuously linked with the United job but has never secured it.
He has been out of management since leaving his post as England boss in July 2024.
Speaking of his YouTube channelRomano poured cold water on suggestions that Southgate is a top candidate for the United Hot Seat. Romano noted that if United really wanted the 55-year-old coach, they would have already made a move for him.
Romano issues Southgate to United update
The Italian journalist said: “Southgate’s name always comes up whenever there is a managerial vacancy at Manchester United.”
“He has an excellent relationship with some people at Manchester United and with people at INEOS. But my understanding is that if United really wanted Southgate, they could have got him.”
“They have not moved forward as they have other priorities at this stage in their process of appointing a new manager in the summer.”
Romano continued: “For now, Michael Carrick is in charge and United will see how he performs. They will then initiate a good process for a new permanent manager.”
“At the moment there is nothing concrete between Manchester United and Gareth Southgate.”
United vs. City starts at 12.30pm.
