Fabian Schar was carried off the field eight days ago.
The Newcastle United defender suffered a nasty injury against Leeds United, which was negative on the evening when Eddie Howe’s side won a thriller 4-3.
It was widely reported at the time that it would likely end his season, perhaps even turning out to be his very last moment in a black and white shirt, as Fabian Schar will see his current contract expire on June 30, 2026.
On Friday morning prior to the FA Cup match against Bournemouth, Eddie Howe had a slightly more positive update about Fabian Schar: “Hopefully not that bad, or maybe not as bad as it initially looked. He suffered an injury there, but not a fracture, it is ligament damage. He visits a specialist in the coming days to get a definitive answer, but perhaps more positive than the initial assessment. The loss of Fabian is a huge blow.”
Now the Swiss defender is giving his own personal update on Thursday, a short statement via his social mediawhere Fabian Schar stated: “The prognosis is better than initially feared… and most importantly, the operation went well in London today!”
Great news from a player who is such a class act both on and off the field.
Fabian Schar is grateful to Newcastle United fans for their support: “Thank you for all the well wishes over the past few weeks – it means a lot!”
The stylish defender, now 34 years old, is undoubtedly one of the biggest signings in the club’s history.
Eight and a half years ago, Rafa Benitez played blindside when he heard through his contacts in Spain that a relegation clause at Deportivo meant Fabian Schar could be signed for just £3 million!
Fabian Schar will hopefully be back before the end of the season and the player insists: “I will be supporting the boys from the stands in the meantime and can’t wait to get back out there.”
Among the many reasons why he wasn’t good enough to be manager of Newcastle United, perhaps the most damning of them all was that Steve Bruce didn’t rate Fabian Schar. Bruce has sometimes played against the likes of Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernandez and even midfielder Isaac Hayden ahead of Schar.
Fortunately, Steve Bruce was sacked just in time and Fabian Schar continued to do what he has done for Newcastle United ever since.
Hopefully there will be many more games for him at NUFC.
