  • Fletcher Sharpe had to be raced last weekend
  • Newcastle Knights Star also became a concussion in Tackle

A leading sports physiotherapist has exposed the full seriousness of Fletcher Sharpe’s injuries after the Newcastle star had contracted a torn spleen and torn kidney on Saturday.

Sharpe reported abdominal pain after a concussion in the 26-20 victory of the Knights on the dolphins – and scans later revealed the full extent of the damage.

It is clear that he sustained the injury when his body hit the ground and landed on his elbow in the same tackle that gave him the concussion.

Physiotherapist Brien Seeney – better known as the NRL Physio on X – told his 56,000 plus followers about the potentially life -threatening nature of Sharpe’s state.

“Real car -crash type things for Fletcher Sharpe, with news that he has suffered a torn spleen to go along with a torn kidney,” he posted.

‘Injuries of this size are considered a medical emergency – require immediate medical attention and can lead to life -threatening internal bleeding.

‘Tackle then did not seem too high strength, but reportedly Sharpe fell on his own elbow who caused the damage.

“Fortunately, it is said that he is recovering well under observation in Perth, but an expected date for his return to the field is clearly very uncertain.”

The five-eights is accompanied by his family in Perth while he continues to receive medical help.

Sharpe is said to have already missed the collision of Friday evening with Canberra because of concussion. The knights have a bye the next week.

Newcastle does not yet have a timeline on the longer they expect the 21-year-old to miss, but he can be out the entire season.

Sharpe has been one of Newcastle’s best threats this year, scored 11 attempts and sets another three in one side that has the worst attacking record in the NRL.

Newcastle has various backup options in the halves, where Tyson Gamble is available again and Jackson Hastings returned to the NRL against Manly this month.

Elsewhere there are fears of dolphins winger Jack Bostock suffered a dreaded ACL fracture in the Perth match.

The potentially seasonal injury comes only a week after the Flyer scored four attempts against Northern Queensland last Saturday.

The Warriors also wait for scans for halfback Luke Metcalf’s quad and winger Dallin Wate-Zelezniak’s only after their loss against Penrith.

Watene-Zelezniak is expected to be put aside for some time with a syndesmosis injury, but the fourth placed club has some hope that Metcalf’s is not serious.
