from the your-own what you bought explanation

Here we go again. The idea that, at least in the field of digital goods or IoT devices, we no longer have what we have bought a long-term theme here at Techdirt. Although the practice of withdrawing functions that are available when purchasing via firmware updates, has been a regular event in the VideoGa consumer room, it has also raised its ugly, anti-consumer head in the realm of everything, of smart home devices, emotional support robots (yes, serious) and even practice equipment.

It seems like a simple concept that everyone should be able to agree: if I buy a product from you that X, Y and Z does, you cannot remove X, Y or Z remotely after I have made that purchase. How we have arrived at a place where companies can easily remove product functions or remove Paywall or without the use of the customer they are essentially luring and switched, is beyond me.

But it continues to happen. The most recent example of this is with Echelon training bikes. Those bicycles that were previously sent to paying customers with all kinds of functions for ride statistics and connections with apps and third -party services without something that is further needed from the user. All of that recently changed a firmware update suddenly an internet connection forced And a subscription to a paid app to make that work.

As explained in a Tuesday Blog post By Roberto Viola, who develops the “QZ (Qdomyos swift)” app This connects Echelon machines with fitness platforms from third parties, such as Peloton, Strava and Apple HealthKit, the Firmware-Update Forcese Echelon machines to connect to the Echelon servers to work well. A user online reported That as a result of updating his machine, it no longer synchronizes with apps such as QZ, and it is unable to view the training statistics of his machine in the Echelon app without an internet connection.

Allegedly affected echelon machines have only the full functionality, including the possibility of sharing real-time statistics, if a user has the Echelon app active and if the machine can reach the servers of Echelon.

Do you want to know how fast you go on the bike you are on? That requires an internet connection. Do you want to get an idea of how you performed on your ride on the bike? That requires an internet connection. And if Echelon would go bankrupt? Then your bike simply does not work further than the basic function of pedaling.

And the possibility to use third -party apps is reportedly just, well, disappeared.

For Some owners of Echelon equipment, QZ, which is currently being assessed as the No. 9 Sports app in the Apple App Store is central to their training sessions. QZ connects the equipment with platforms such as Zwift, which shows people virtual, picturesque worlds while they exercise. It has also made new functions possible for some machines, such as automatic resistance adjustments. That is why Viola argued in his blog that QZ ‘helped companies to grow’.

‘A big reason why I am the [E]Chelon was because of your app and I have put thousands of kilometers on the bike since 2021, ”a Reddit user told The developer on the social media platform on Wednesday.

Instead of accepting that someone there makes his product more attractive and valuable, Echelon goes instead for a combination of open control and the desire for customer data. Data that will of course be used for marketing purposes.

There is also value in customer data. Getting more customers to practice with his app means that Echelon can collect more data for things such as job development and marketing.

What you don’t hear anywhere, at least that I can find, every discussion about the possibility of returning or receiving refunds for customers who bought these bikes when they did things that they will no longer do after the fact. That is about as clearly a bait and switching type of a scenario if you will probably find.

Unfortunately, with the FTC’s Bureau or Consumer Protection is only run by Another impetus of the Federalist SocietyIt is unlikely that everything that will be done to stop things like this.
