Here we go again. The idea that, at least in the field of digital goods or IoT devices, we no longer have what we have bought a long-term theme here at Techdirt. But it continues to happen. The most recent example of this is with Echelon training bikes. Those bicycles that were previously sent to paying customers with all kinds of functions for ride statistics and connections with apps and third -party services without something that is further needed from the user. All of that recently changed a firmware update suddenly an internet connection forced And a subscription to a paid app to make that work.
As explained in a Tuesday Blog post By Roberto Viola, who develops the “QZ (Qdomyos swift)” app This connects Echelon machines with fitness platforms from third parties, such as Peloton, Strava and Apple HealthKit, the Firmware-Update Forcese Echelon machines to connect to the Echelon servers to work well. There is also value in customer data. Getting more customers to practice with his app means that Echelon can collect more data for things such as job development and marketing.
What you don’t hear anywhere, at least that I can find, every discussion about the possibility of returning or receiving refunds for customers who bought these bikes when they did things that they will no longer do after the fact. That is about as clearly a bait and switching type of a scenario if you will probably find.
