Chichester, England-Pretty Polly Stakes (G1) Heroine Whirl (IRE), has been named 4-year-old See The Fire (GB) 31 July in the Nassau Stakes (G1) over 1 1/4 miles on Goodwood Racecourse.
The winner will get a guaranteed start in the Mark Breeders ‘Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) of the maker via the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series: Win and You’re in.
The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 93 Into traces in 15 countries whose winners receive automatic starting positions and reimbursements that are paid in a corresponding race at the Breeders Cup world championships, planned for October 31,-NOV. 1 in the del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, California.
Trained by Hek O’Brien For Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Mrs. John Magnier, Whirl Comes from a victory of 1 1/4 length in the beautiful Polly Stakes in June in the Curragh form that was considerably stimulated last Saturday when the second place Kalpana (GB) ended a length behind Calandagan (Ire) in the iconic King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1) in Ascot.
A daughter of Wootton Bassett (GB), Whirl already showed her talent when she had beaten a neck in the Epsom Oaks (G1) by Stablemate Minnie Hauk (Ire). She’s opposed to serious opposition in the form of JC Smith’s See the firewho proved himself against the Colts when he finished third in a red -hot prince of Wales’s Stakes (G1) in Ascot. She earned her additional access to that competition a month earlier when she crossed the line of the Middleton Stakes (G2) in York, an amazing 12 lengths for the field.
“She started in fantastic form this year and was very impressive in the Middleton, and won a group 2 on Easy Fashion,” Trainer Andrew Balding said about the fire. “And then we thought she had a super race on Ascot against the boys in the use of the Prince of Wales.
“As a 3-year-old we did not see the best of her until we came to the Nassau Stakes in Goodwood where she was scored scary. Then she continued and won the Strensall Stakes (G3) against older Colts in York”
“There are indications that she is always improving, and she certainly seems to have done physically. She is an exciting anti -foolish, and hopefully the best will come.”
The race could be an interesting barometer of how this year’s classic generation weigh the medium distance against the 4-year-olds.
Ballydoyle’s second flag carrier, 3-year-old Story before going to sleep (IRE)Is currently third in gambling. Frankel’s daughter (GB) did not produce the promise of her 2-year form, who had four consecutive victories, including in a group 2 and 3. However, she seemed back to her best last time-out when she finished second at Chantilly in the Prix de Diane Longines (G1) in her first start about the 1 1/4 miles.
Shane R. Stafford ownership Cercene (Ire)Another Irish Raider, everyone shocked in June when she stormed home to win the Coronation Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot at 33-1. She is 6-1 to repeat the favor this week compared to an extra 2 furlongs.
David Howden’s group 1-winning mare, Running Lion (GB)Is the outsider on 25-1 and is the only 5-year-old in the race. She has not found a success this season, but her trainers, John & Thady Gosden, have a fantastic record in the race – John who records four winners in the race and a fifth with son Thady on the license.
It is currently doing well for Thursday.
As part of the benefits of the Challenge series, Breeders’ Cup pays the entrance fees for the winner of the Nassau Stakes to start in the Mark Frequy & Mare Turf of the Maker’s Cup Filly & Mare, which will be performed at 1 3/8 miles. Breeders’ Cup also offers a travel allowance for all starters outside of North America to participate in the world championships.
