Ex-Chelsea striker Pato in talks about taking over Colchester United

Former AC Milan, Chelsea and Brazil striker Alexandre Pato is part of a consortium interested in taking over Colchester United.

Pato was present as Colchester beat Fleetwood Town 2-1 at the JobServe Community Stadium this weekend as talks over a possible takeover of the club continue.

While no deal is imminent, the BBC reports that a takeover involving Pato and the consortium is possible. Pato ended his football career last year at the age of 36 and now wants to become an owner.

The Brazilian scored 63 goals in 150 appearances for AC Milan after joining Italy from Internacional, winning the Serie A title with the club in 2010-11.

He later played for clubs such as Corinthians, Sao Paulo, Villarreal, Tianjin Quanjian and Orlando City, in addition to a short injury loan spell at Chelsea. Pato finished his career with 188 goals in 500 club games and 10 in 27 international appearances for Brazil at a senior level.

His involvement in the consortium looking to take over Colchester will certainly increase interest among the League Two side, who are eighth in the fourth tier and battling for promotion.

Last month, Colchester owner Robbie Cowling discussed the ongoing takeover situation.

“We have a number of interested parties. We are not interested in people unless they have the wealth to take the club much further than me,” he told BBC Essex.

“There’s no time frame, the cutoff has to be that I hand it over to the right person. It’s a bit like when you’re looking for someone to adopt your child, you have to vet them.”
