Cris Cyborg addressed the situation when the former UFC featherweight champion retweeted a message Shepherd article about the scrapped co-main event fight for UFC’s first numbered event of 2026. Cyborg lost her hold on the UFC’s 145-pound crown to the aforementioned Nunes when she memorably finished with strikes in what remains to this day one of her two pro MMA losses.
As for the Harrison vs. Nunes fight that will take place later this month her personal X-pagesaid Cyborg,
“You have to wonder if @KaylaH is more sustainable at 145. I can’t imagine these cuts to 135 being a sustainable career.”
Amanda Nunes was predicted to withdraw from UFC 324 by Kayla Harrison and his manager
According to previous comments from Kayla Harrison and the reigning UFC champion’s management representation, Amanda Nunes was believed to be a wildcard when it came to competing in this return fight. Now that Nunes hasn’t fought since a win over Irene Aldana in June 2023, it would make sense to some extent that there was previously some doubt about how smooth this return to MMA could go.
Harrison had previously spoken to Ariel Helwani about how she wasn’t necessarily worried about Nunes hitting the 135-pound mark, but that the thought had crossed her mind. The multiple Olympic gold medalist and former PFL champion also referenced previous instances where Nunes has had certain issues that have resulted in his withdrawal from the main event, and Harrison’s manager has doubled down on that sentiment a bit as well.
Ali Abdelaziz mentioned it Submission radio that he asked the UFC to have a backup fighter on site in case its lead, Harrison, was faced with a vacancy created by Nunes. It’s unclear if they will keep Nunes on this card or if the UFC will simply rebook it for a later date, but it appears the UFC will pursue the latter option.
