In a bold move to boost youth empowerment in Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formally relaunched the laptop program under the umbrella of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) and the Prime Minister’s Youth Program (PMYP). The 2025 phase aims to distribute 100,000 laptops on merit to talented students in public sector universities across the country.
As education increasingly relies on digital tools, many students in remote areas have been disadvantaged by a lack of access to modern hardware, inadequate infrastructure and challenging geography. The updated plan reflects a commitment to digital inclusion and equal opportunities in the remotest corners of Pakistan.
“This program is not for personal glory but for our young citizens who are the future architects of Pakistan,” the Prime Minister noted during the launch of the fourth phase.
TechJuice had the opportunity to review the laptops before the distribution ceremony. According to our team review, here are the specs of these laptops: a 14″ FHD display, Ryzen 5 7430U CPU, 8 GB RAM + extra slot, 256 GB SSD, fully featured USB-C, HDMI, Micro SD reader, RJ-45 etc. Students will definitely receive a machine that can do much more than just typing reports. Here’s how these features translate into real-world student use:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7430U, a 6-core/8-thread mobile processor, provides enough power for multitasking: running code editors, virtual machines, simulation software, statistical packages, creative tools (e.g. graphic design or video editing) in addition to regular browser-based research.
Memory: 8 GB DDR4-3200 (with a second free slot): With 8 GB you can comfortably use modern browsers with many tabs, an office suite, Zoom/Teams and even light development environments. The extra slot means you can upgrade to 16GB or 32GB later, which is a big plus for students who have heavier workloads (e.g. programming, data science).
Display: 14″ Full HD (1920×1080), anti-glare: A high-resolution screen provides clarity when reading text, viewing CAD drawings, spreadsheets, design models, and the anti-glare coating helps in bright light or outdoors (which is useful in places without ideal lighting).
Storage: 256 GB SSD, M.2 slot: Fast boot times, fast application loading, and plenty of space to store academic materials, course videos, project files, and portable software. The M.2 slot again offers future upgrade potential (512 GB or 1 TB) as student needs grow.
Images: Integrated graphics (modern Ryzen iGPU; although not a dedicated GPU), the integrated graphics are good enough for HD video playback, online design/UX work, programming with visualization libraries, even light gaming or 3D modeling in beginner mode.
Connectivity: Wi-Fi 5 (dual band 2.4 GHz/5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.0: Reliable wireless network access is critical in remote or campus environments. Dual-band Wi-Fi allows students to switch to 5 GHz for faster, less congested access, if available. Bluetooth 5.0 means wireless headphones, external mice/keyboards, and even support for Bluetooth speakers.
Ports: USB-A x2, USB-C x1 (fully functional), HDMI, Micro SD card reader, 3.5mm audio jack, RJ-45 Ethernet port, very generous for a student laptop.
- Full USB-C functionality means you can use a single cable for power, data, external monitor and USB hub.
- HDMI means easy connection to external monitors/TVs; useful for group study sessions, presentations or even connecting to classroom projectors.
- Micro SD slot helps transfer large data sets, camera images or offline sources.
- RJ-45 (Ethernet) is a big plus in areas where Wi-Fi is unstable or weak. The plug-in capability ensures stable connectivity for research downloads, online exams and live classes.
US Standard Keyboard, 720p HD Camera with Shield/Cover, Dual Stereo Speakers: The camera allows students in remote places to attend live classes, inter-university webinars and Zoom sessions; the cover provides privacy.
Dual stereo speakers provide decent sound for video lectures or group discussions. The US Standard keyboard is widely compatible with software shortcuts and key assignments used in global layouts.
A Computer Science student can use this laptop to write code, compile projects, test algorithms, use virtual machines or containers, something that older generic machines simply couldn’t handle.
A social science student can use it to perform data analyzes (e.g. using Python, R) on regional datasets, prepare presentations, collaborate online with colleagues in Karachi or Islamabad, submit assignments digitally, and even connect to remote internships.
An engineering student can connect to a monitor in a laboratory via HDMI, download large simulation software via Ethernet, attend a guest lecture from abroad, design, export and share a prototype in CAD, or coordinate group work with classmates in different provinces.
- For freelancing: With the rise of remote working, a student who receives this laptop can join online platforms, create digital content, build websites, do graphic design, edit videos or even start a startup from home in a village. The specifications provide a solid basis to compete globally.
- For e-learning: Thanks to the anti-glare screen and solid audio/visual setup, even students in dark environments or shared spaces can watch recorded lectures, take online courses (MOOCs), access digital libraries and educate themselves on their own time – crucial for remote areas where access to physical libraries is limited.
The Prime Minister’s Laptop Program 2025 has the opportunity to be a strategic investment in Pakistan’s youth. Especially in remote, deprived areas, this is nothing less than a life-changing tool. By equipping students in Balochistan, Sindh and AJK, among others, with modern computing tools, the government is helping to unlock potential that has long been hampered by geography and infrastructure.
When a young student in a remote district opens the laptop for the first time, he not only gets a piece of hardware, but he also gets connectivity, opportunity, the world at his fingertips, a chance to update himself, to learn, to compete.
