GIan Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) was one of the most important sculptors and architects of the Italian baroque. Bernini was born in Naples and moved to Rome with his family when he was young. He was a student of his father, Pietro Bernini, also a sculptor, and was formed artistically in Rome. He was discovered by Pope Paul V, who took him under his protection and used him various works.
