Everton are reportedly preparing to break their transfer record by signing Napoli star Scott McTominay, according to Spanish newspaper Transfers.
The Toffees have been competing in last place in the Premier League in recent years, but since David Moyes’ return as manager they have started pushing for higher finishes.
They finished 13th in the league last season and are currently in exactly the same position this season, with 15 points from 11 games and just three points behind the European places.
Jack Grealish, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Iliman Ndiaye were central to Everton’s good start. However, Grealish and Dewsbury-Hall have moved on loan from Manchester City and Chelsea respectively.
So perhaps Moyes’ side have started to line up possible alternative midfield options for next season if they ultimately fail to buy Dewsbury-Hall on a permanent basis.
Now, Transfers states that Everton are looking for players with Premier League experience and proven quality, and have identified McTominay as a serious option.
McTominay to Everton
His ability to make late runs inside the box and score some important goals has attracted the Merseyside club. Moyes sees his compatriot as a player comparable to Marouane Fellaini. So they are willing to break the bank to get the deal done.
Gylfi Sigurdsson is currently Everton’s record signing and they bought him in 2017 for a fee of around £45 million. However, Moyes’ side are ready to break the club’s transfer record by buying McTominay and are prepared to invest around £62 million.
The Scot guided Napoli to the Serie A title last season after joining from Manchester United and has continued to show his productivity this season, scoring five goals in all competitions.
He stands 6 feet tall and is a versatile player as he can play anywhere in the middle of the park. The 28-year-old is a top class player and could be a big step forward for the Merseyside club if they buy him.
However, it will be interesting to see whether Everton will ultimately make a concrete move to lure the Napoli star to the Hill Dickinson Stadium in January or next summer.
