Everton are investigating their January move for Bologna striker Santiago Castro

Everton have set their sights on Bologna striker Santiago Castro over a possible move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium in January. TEAMtalk.

Castro has been a revelation in Serie A since his move from Argentine side Vélez Sarsfield in January 2024. After ending last season with ten goals and eight assists in all competitions for I Rossoblù, he has played a key role in Bologna’s form this season, with five goals for Vincenzo Italiano’s Europe-chasing side.

His performances have attracted the attention not only of clubs, but also of the Argentina national team, as the 21-year-old received his first international call-up to the senior team in March.

Despite having a contract at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara that runs until 2028, Bologna will have a battle to keep the versatile forward as his performances have attracted the interest of several clubs.

One of the clubs looking to sign Castro is Everton, the club said TEAMtalkwho claims the Toffees are monitoring the Argentine star over a possible move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium in January.

The report adds that while Everton remain optimistic that Thierno Barry, who joined the club in the summer, will regain his form, they have not ruled out signing a new centre-forward in January, with Castro now being monitored.

Citing reports from Italy, TEAMtalk states that Bologna wants to extend the Argentine’s contract with a pay increase, but that Everton remains on standby to take action if talks fail.

Castro to Everton

The Italian club remain keen to keep the South American forward but could consider a bid of around £31m to clear his departure, according to the report.

The Everton striker has struggled to get going this season despite significant investment made in the summer, with Iliman Ndiaye’s four goals being the most of any player in the team.

David Moyes’ options at centre-forward include Beto, who has scored once in the Premier League this season – a header in the 3-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 30 – while Thierno Barry is still waiting to open his account following his move from Villarreal in July.

While a move for Castro seems logical given his excellent form since moving to Italy, it still seems like a gamble as Beto has scored double goals for Udinese in consecutive seasons in Italy but still finds it difficult to perform consistently in England.
