- Ethereum could serve as the economic layer for decentralized AI coordination and reputation.
- Local LLMs and ZK payments enable trusted AI interactions without linking user identities.
- AI models can audit dApp transactions, enabling verifiable cypherpunk-style application usage.
Vitalik Buterin has shared new thoughts on merging Ethereum with artificial intelligence.
The Co-founder of Ethereum argues against the pursuit of “accelerationist AGI” development. Instead, he wants a path that protects human freedom and security. His vision combines crypto principles with AI advances to create trustworthy systems.
Buterin posted his updated views on social media, referencing his 2024 essay on the intersections of Ethereum and AI. He pushed back against suggestions to “work on AGI,” calling the framing fundamentally flawed.
The approach feels undifferentiated to him, as if you were describing Ethereum as simply ‘working in the financial world’. He believes civilization needs purposeful guidance rather than a blind acceleration toward artificial general intelligence.
Privacy and trust in AI interactions
Buterin outlined several tools for creating trustworthy AI interactions. Local LLM tooling is at the top of his priority list. Users could run language models on their own devices without relying on centralized servers.
Two years ago I wrote this post about the possible areas I see for ethereum + AI intersections: https://t.co/ds9mLnrJWm
This is a topic that many people are passionate about, but I always worry that we think about the two from completely different philosophical considerations. pic.twitter.com/pQq5kazT61

Zero-knowledge payments for API calls would give people anonymous access to remote models. Each call would not be linked to a user’s identity.
Cryptographic methods can improve AI privacy in various applications. Client-side authentication would confirm server-side assurances through cryptographic proofs and TEE attestations.
These tools mirror privacy features already being developed for other computing tasks. Buterin referenced his 2024 Ethereum privacy roadmap. The same principles apply to protecting LLM interactions.
Ethereum as the economic basis of AI
The Ethereum network could serve as the economic layer for AI-related activities.
Buterin envisions AI agents making API calls and hiring other bots for tasks. Smart contracts would handle deposits and dispute resolution mechanisms.
Standards such as ERC-8004 and reputation systems would track the trustworthiness of AI agents. Economic coordination would enable decentralized AI architectures instead of centralized control. Organizations do not need to design and manage all AI systems in-house.
This economic framework aims to distribute authority more broadly. Buterin noted that economies serve as tools for decentralization, not as an end in themselves.
Realizing the Cypherpunk vision
Buterin wants to make the cypherpunk “mountain man” vision practical. Philosophy has always emphasized verification over trust. People couldn’t realistically verify all the code themselves, making the vision unrealistic.
Language models completely change this dynamic. LLMs can handle the verification work that humans cannot handle.
Users can interact with Ethereum apps without third-party interfaces. Local models would independently propose and verify transactions.
Smart contract audit would become accessible to average users. AI assistants can interpret formal verification proofs and assess application trust models. The verification-first approach is finally becoming practical at scale.
Better markets through AI augmentation
Prediction markets and decentralized governance have strong theoretical foundations. Limitations of human attention have limited its effectiveness in the real world.
Square voting, combinatorial auctions, and universal barter economies face similar challenges.
AI removes the bottleneck by scaling human judgment. Decision markets become practical when LLMs deal with complexity. Governance systems can process more information and make advanced choices.
Buterin described these developments as in line with defensive acceleration principles. The focus remains on decentralized cooperation and improved defense mechanisms.
He believes Ethereum can revise successful ideas from 2014 with new ones AI and zero knowledge tools.
Vitalik presented his vision as a comprehensive framework. Both crypto and AI perspectives need integration for meaningful progress. His approach puts human empowerment first over uncontrolled technological acceleration.
