The talented ARSENAL The forward signed his new contract last summer and had hoped to get more playing time under Arteta this season, but he is not getting the minutes he would have liked and a move to Marseille was being pushed.
It’s a move Mikel is familiar with, having seen William Saliba make the move on loan for the 2021/2022 season before returning to the N5 and making his mark. Nwaneri found the back of the net just a day after his move to Marseille as Roberto De Zerbi’s side defeated Lens in Ligue 1.
“We defended well and deserved to win,” De Zerbi said after the victory. ‘I would have liked to score more, but it is a very strong team that deserves its place.
‘If we can consistently reproduce this level, we will be a solid team. Otherwise we won’t go anywhere.’
On Arsenal academy graduate Nwaneri, De Zerbi added: “Ethan will become a top player, I am sure. You see the quality, the impact… it’s so good, the same goes for [fellow January signing] Quinten Timber.’
Mikel Arteta has spoken about the decision to send Nwaneri on loan ARSENAL boss said: “I think the talented young players we have need minutes, and in this case Ethan didn’t have enough minutes, and the last thing we want is to shorten his development, because he is such a talent and someone who lives and breathes football; that is his life.”
“After discussing it with him, his father, the agent and the club, we decided it was best to leave and go out on loan.
“Then we have to choose the right place, and because we have all the options, we also have to understand the experience we had in Marseille with [William Saliba]the fact that Roberto [De Zerbi] is there and he’s an incredible developer of young talent and he’s a very brave manager in the way he plays, the way he plays with young talent as well and he’s got a great track record of that.
“I think it fits the way we play for the qualities we want to see in Ethan. So it will be a great experience for him.”
He added: “Not only me, but many players who are in these kinds of situations and just understand how he will feel, because when they talk about the opportunity and the clubs that are interested in you going, the first thing that happens is excitement.
“You are ready to play, you speak to the manager, he is very excited about you and you are going to play this weekend and you are going to start a lot of games and this is all very good.
“But one day you have to say, ‘Okay, pack your bags, these are the plane tickets and you have to go to Marseille,’ and that is fear, uncertainty, getting away from a place that was very comfortable for him, near his family.
“But this is what it’s all about at the end of the day: you have to be thrown out there among the sharks in an incredible football culture, atmosphere and club and that will make him so good.”
