Derbyshire have signed England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir on a two-year contract.
Bashir, 22, is a current England international with four five-wicket hauls in 19 Test appearances.
He made his Test debut against India in February 2024, dismissing Rohit Sharma for the first of his 68 international wickets to date.
He would go on to claim 17 wickets in the series, the second most by an English player, despite only appearing in three of the five matches.
Pleased
At the age of 20 years and 282 days old, Bashir became the youngest English men’s bowler to claim a five-wicket haul in a home Test match when he took 5-41 against the West Indies at Trent Bridge in 2024.
He joins from Somerset, but remains centrally contracted to the ECB until the end of 2026 and has committed himself until the end of the 2027 season.
Head of Cricket Mickey Arthur said: “I am pleased that we have been able to bring Shoaib into our squad, he is a current international with huge potential and we have worked hard to make this deal happen.
“We needed to add another spinner to our ranks, following the departure of Alex Thomson, and now we have a very exciting crop of young spinners in Shoaib, Jack Morley and Joe Hawkins, who can all continue their development within our ranks.
“Our recruitment is all about bringing in quality players who can build on the solid foundation we laid in 2025.
“It’s really exciting to bring in a current England international. He will bring a lot of energy and experience to our dressing room despite having so much time to improve his game.”
Exciting
Bashir added: “Derbyshire has a very exciting project and working with Mickey Arthur, one of the best coaches in the world, is a great opportunity for any young player.
“I am keen to play more red ball cricket, continue my development in the white ball formats and challenge for promotion with Derbyshire.
“This is an exciting step for me and I can’t wait to meet the group.”
