The Bengaluru police have arrested a 21-year-old student of an engineering college in south Bengaluru for allegedly raping an elderly female student on campus.
The suspect has been identified as Jeevan Gowda, a fifth semester student of a private school in Basavanagudi. According to a senior police officer, the girl is a year older than the suspect and the two had known each other for the past three months.
According to the FIR, the alleged incident took place on October 10 during lunch break in the men’s toilets of the university.
The girl stated that she went to class at 8:55 a.m. on the day of the alleged incident. She had to pick up some things from Jeevan Gowda and told him she would meet him later in the day. During lunch break, Jeevan Gowda reportedly called her and asked her to meet him downstairs in their block.
When she met him, he allegedly took her to the seventh floor of the architecture block, where he forced himself on her.
“I left the place and got to the sixth floor where he pulled me into the men’s room and locked the door,” she told police.
According to the complaint, Jeevan Gowda took her phone and kept it in his pocket when her boyfriend called. He then allegedly raped her in the laundry room. The alleged incident took place between 1.30pm and 1.50pm. Later that day, Jeevan Gowda allegedly called her again and asked if she wanted ‘pills’, the FIR said.
Although the alleged incident took place on October 10, the girl filed a complaint on October 15 after informing her parents. She told police that two of her friends encouraged and supported her in disclosing the matter to her family, after which she filed a complaint.
The Hanumanthanagar police have registered a case under Article 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to rape. Jeevan Gowda was arrested soon after the complaint was filed on October 15.
An officer told me The Hindu that the suspect is a fifth semester student while the victim is in the seventh semester. Because she was behind in one subject, she went to a fifth-semester class, where she met Jeevan Gowda.
“During interrogation, he maintained that there was mutual consent. We have recorded his statement and are investigating the matter from all angles,” the officer said.
