Emma Raducanu reaches Maiden Washington Open Semi-Final with victory over Maria Sakkari

Emma Raducanu booked her place in the semi-final of the Washington for the first time with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Maria Sakkari in Greece.

The victory, one day on which both players had to fight at high temperatures, means that Raducanu Katie Boulter will catch up on Monday as British no. 1.

After losing the opening match, Raducanu dropped Serve in a long second game, but managed to break back immediately.

Raducanu broke again to make it 4-3 with thanks to a shirted drop-volley effort from Sakkari, which again flew back after a new double error by the Brit.

After she got her nose in the front again, Raducanu kept her serve to take the opening set 6-4.

The 22-year-old wanted to continue her impressive series about the Greek player on her 30th birthday, but Sakkari-Die Boulter previously defeated a 4-2 lead in the second set.

Temperatures of a maximum of 36C took their toll because a physio was called upon to check the US Open winner of 2021.

The break in the game new life revealed Raducanu, and she won five consecutive games to book her lock in the last four in two hours and 10 minutes.

“I think my self -confidence has been built since Miami,” she told the WTA. “The amount of work I do behind the scenes, to have that in the cupboard and to bank, you know you did it, it takes a bit of pressure from the results.

“I am really satisfied today, I think Maria has played a really good match and I think these circumstances fit the jumpiness of her game and I am really happy that I harden it.”

Raducanu will be confronted with Clara Tauson or Anna Kalinskaya for a place in the final.
