The winter transfer window offers Manchester United an ideal opportunity to continue rebuilding Ruben Amorim.
It is an opportunity for INEOS to further build Amorim’s dream team and sign players tailor-made for the Portuguese tactician’s system.
While most expect the focus to center on midfield reinforcements, there could be other transfer opportunities that are simply too tempting to pass up.
One of those openings could be the chance to sign Emiliano Martinez.
Summer chase
After a turbulent period between the sticks, United had little choice but to strengthen their goalkeeping department.
Amorim had long desired an upgrade from Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, and INEOS made that their mission.
Martinez and Senne Lammens were identified as the main targets. And while either could have arrived on deadline day, it was Lammens who ultimately got the credit.
Martinez must have understandably remained frustrated, but he had no choice but to stay at Villa Park.
The failed summer change does not seem to have affected his form; he has been stable.
Yet the mood around him at Aston Villa appears to have changed in the aftermath of that failed move.
Unai Emery’s side now appear to feel that it may be for the best if the World Cup winner moves on.
Martinez offers welcome
In a revealing report on the Midlands club’s goalkeeping situation, Wayne Veysey prescribes Football insiderclaims:
“Villa will accept bids for star goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in the January transfer window.
“Unai Emery and the club’s recruitment team are exploring alternative options for the goalkeeper as they look to find a long-term solution between the sticks.”
Now that Lammens has adapted well and appears to be a goal, the question arises: do United still need Martinez?
Veysey adds:
“January could present him [Martinez] with a chance to leave the Second City team as Man United continue to monitor Martinez.
Martinez to United somehow makes sense
Driven by the desire to keep improving, a move for another top goalkeeper like Martinez feels logical.
There have always been doubts surrounding Bayindir.
As with Onana, there is a feeling that United need to upgrade on him.
Martinez, armed with vast experience and the brilliance that earned him the FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year award, could be the perfect replacement for Bayindir.
The Villa shot-stopper could also be the perfect mentor for Lammens, especially if United can get him for a bargain price.
Learning from the South American could help the summer recruit live up to the hype of the next Thibaut Courtois.
