Elton John wanted to spread some Christmas cheer when he posted a festive video on social media.

But instead of promoting any festive cheer, the legendary singer ended up sparking a viral frenzy over the state of his oven.

The 78-year-old Oscar winner got to work Instagram to share a tongue-in-cheek snippet of his 1973 holiday hit Step Into Christmas.

Captioned “If you can’t escape it, you might as well get into Christmas! Who’s ready?”, the Crocodile Rock hitmaker was seen in the 14-second clip as he strolled around his huge kitchen in the home he shares with husband David Furnish and their children.

The music icon opened his light green cabinets, as well as the drawers and appliances in the room.

As he opened a door or drawer, his Christmas carol started playing, but stopped abruptly when the cupboard, appliance or drawer closed.

The funny video ends with the caption: “It must be that time of year again…”

While many fans found the clip hilarious, others couldn’t help but notice Elton’s oven door in less than perfect condition.

As he opens the door, you see that the glass of the oven is covered in grease stains and food residue, which many viewers were quick to point out in the comments.

“Nice to see that even Elton’s oven needs cleaning before Christmas, and my oven glass needs an oven doctor too,” one person wrote.

Someone else added: “I want to clean the inside of that oven door.”

Many admitted they felt reassured by seeing the actual state of Elton’s kitchen – noting that it’s reassuring to know a star of such fame and notoriety has a very lived-in home.

“Thank God he has a dirty oven door too,” someone chimed in.

“Our oven is (currently) cleaner than Elton’s. We are winning at life,” another added.

“I looked twice to check his oven door, now don’t feel so bad about mine!” wrote a third person.

“So nice to see that it’s a real used kitchen and not just a showpiece,” noted one commenter, while another responded: “Nice to see that talented and famous people also have everyday problems in life!”

One person even suggested that Elton make a follow-up video showing himself cleaning the dirty machine.

“My Christmas wish – a part 2 role from David, in which Elton opens Mr Muscle oven cleaner on Christmas morning!” they joked.

Fans flocked to the comments section to express their shock over the dirty kitchen appliance, with some even offering to clean it. Photo: eltonjohn/Instagram

According to the Australian website clean4youa dirty oven can pose real problems for households, such as fire hazards and health risks.

“Grease and food residues can ignite, especially at high temperatures,” the website says.

“Residues can produce smoke and odors that affect your cooking and the taste of meals.

“Layers of dirt can block heat circulation, causing uneven baking or roasting.

“Burnt residue can transfer flavors to your dishes, making meals taste good.

“Bacteria, allergens and chemical residues can accumulate, creating a potential health risk in the long term.”

The Grammy winner did not reveal which of his many homes the video was shot in.

It is believed the clip was shot at his primary residence: a sprawling estate in Old Windsor, United Kingdom.

The Chart bought the property in 1974 for around £400,000 ($A804,000), although it is believed to be worth millions more today.

Elton has had several homes in his portfolio over the years, including another property in nearby Pinner and a townhouse in London, as well as several European retreats, including homes in France and Italy.

He is also the proud owner of a beautiful residence in Beverly Hills, California, which he purchased in 2012 after publicly refusing to live in Los Angeles.

Although he had expressed his reluctance to live in California, they changed their tune when he and his husband came across a place to live.

Built in 2016, the Trousdale Estates property is decorated with colorful patterns, textures and artwork.

“It’s all about the art,” Elton said Architectural summary in March 2013.

“Certainly, there was a family slant to the art we chose. We focused on things that are colorful and positive and celebrations of life,” Furnish told the outlet at the time.
