Edmonton Oilers acquire Tristan Jarry from Pittsburgh

The Edmonton Oilers are making a goalie change, acquiring Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

NHL Rumors: Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Tristan Jarry

As part of the deal, the Oilers also get Samuel Poulin in exchange for Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak and a 2029 second-round pick.

There is no salary retention in this deal between the Penguins and Oilers. This deal required a goalkeeper to go the other way.

The Edmonton Oilers had been looking to upgrade their goaltending for a while, but had never found anything better on the market. General Manager Stan Bowman has stated this repeatedly. Not to mention they didn’t rush into anything because they wanted to see if the team could play better for Skinner and Calvin Pickard.

NHL Rumors: Will the Edmonton Oilers make a goaltending move this season?

The Oilers have shown that they can defend well, and with this duo they have been to the Stanley Cup final in consecutive seasons. Still, a move was needed if there was any hope of salvaging this season, keeping Connor McDavid and still having the opportunity to win.

That’s the one thing everyone talked about, what if the goaltending had been better, maybe the Oilers would have won against the Florida Panthers on one of those occasions. But another slow start forced the hand of GM Stan Bowman.

In his career with the Oilers, Skinner has played 197 games, including 191 starts, with a record of 109-62-18 with a 2.74 GAA save percentage and .904. But he has a save percentage of less than 900 this season, and a change of scenery will do him good.

The Oilers had been linked to Tristan Jarry since the summer. There were two reports in recent weeks about Jarry is being moved from Pittsburgh to Edmonton. Even last Friday there was talk of Jarry being on his way. He was an Edmonton Oil King, after all.

Throughout his career, Jarry has played in 307 games, starting 294, with a record of 161-100-32 and a GAA of 2.74 and a save percentage of .909. It’s an upgrade, but not much of one. But the way Jarry has performed this year, posting a 9-3-1 record with a 2.66 GAA and .909 save percentage, the Oilers saw as an upgrade.

NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers

Additionally, the Oilers traded a 2027 third-round pick to the Nashville Predators for Spencer Stastney.

With the loss of depth on the back end, the Oilers need a defenseman to replace Kulak.
