Eddie Nketiah says that Crystal Palace ‘thoroughly earned’ to beat Liverpool in Selhurst Park on Saturday after scoring the winning goal at death.

The hosts oppressed the ruling Premier League champions for a large part of the afternoon after they had taken an early lead by the recurring Ismaila Sarr.

Only in the 87th minute the side of Arne Slot finally made the breakthrough when replacement Federico Chiesa found an equalizer.

But the Reds got their first defeat of the season when Nketiah, who was also jumped out of the bank in the second half, shot the decisive goal in the 97th minute.

Liverpool stays at the top of the table with 15 points of their opening of six games, but Palace is now on 12 points to second place.

“The boys are in really good form and think that we can win every game and today we showed that,” said Nketiah BBC match of the day after the last whistle.

“That is the environment we have created, we go in every game that we can win.

“The manager just said to help the team. When I arrive, I have to fight and help.”

Nketiah stepped at the end of the ball after a flick-on of a long throw before he ended with Aplomb, although there was a long wait while VAR had checked offside.

“It was together and I just tried to concentrate on my first touch. I trust myself with both feet and it was a nice finish with my left foot, with a little nervous waiting for VAR.

“It is nothing less than earning the boys. We never give up, we never stop believing.”

Nketiah also told Sky Sports: “We always continue to believe. There was still time to play. The manager said he would stay calm and you will get a different situation and luckily we have done that.

“There are not many teams that can create so many opportunities against Liverpool, so a thoroughly earned three points.

“We just take it one game at the same time. We have a really good group, we will continue to push and try to bring more success to the fans.”
