Eddie Howe declares after defeat against Marseille: ‘It could have been so different…’

Eddie Howe looked on as Newcastle United took a six-minute lead through Harvey Barnes.

United then fought away in the first half and although Marseille had chances, so did Newcastle on the counter as they attacked quickly and put numbers forward.

After taking the lead within six minutes of the start of the match, Marseille turned the lead around in the first five minutes of the second half.

Nick Pope completely misjudged it as he tried to get behind his defense seconds after the break, but Aubameyang always got there first and then finished from a tight angle on the right.

A few minutes later it was Aubamayang again, a very sharp finish, this time Livramento should have tried harder to stop the cross and then Schar could have been tighter on the striker, although there was no denying that it was a high quality goal.

Newcastle United gave everything they could in this match and must rue the five minute spell in which they lost this match. No wonder Eddie Howe stated that after the match; “It could have been so different…”

Eddie Howe speaks to UEFA after Marseille 2 Newcastle 1:

“What a disappointment for us, because it could have been so different.

“It started so well, we took a really positive step forward in the way we approached the game today.

“We were a transition threat, we performed very well in the first half and it could have been so different…”

Eddie Howe about the second half:

“I think that goal immediately after half-time changes the atmosphere in the entire stadium and the match itself.

“I think it was a loss of concentration for us and maybe we didn’t respond well enough.

“We conceded the second and from that moment on it became difficult.”

Eddie Howe on Newcastle United’s Champions League campaign:

“We have worked hard to get ourselves into this position.

“There are a lot of tests ahead of us and there will be a lot of tough away games during this period, but today is a disappointment.”
