UFC CEO Dana White has become the face of Zuffa Boxing and he has emphasized the importance of the promotion’s own championship. White has emphasized that his goal is not to run boxing’s long-standing sanctioning bodies out of town. Still, he has made it clear that only Zuffa Boxing and Ring Magazine belts are eligible for his promotion.
Ever since White started making moves in the sweet science, Matchroom Boxing’s Hearn has feuded with the UFC boss despite mutual respect. The longtime promoter doubled down during an interview with iFL TV. Hearn put the Zuffa Boxing championship into overdrive (via MMAfighting).
“That’s the nastiest shit I’ve ever seen,” Hearn said. “You know I would never do that, but I was just laughing because I read about Jai Opetaia fighting Brandon Glanton for the Zuffa World Championship, whenever that was, and I thought, ‘You know what? I could just do that.’ That would be very funny. Why don’t we also do an iFL version?”
Hearn even went so far as to say that creating a title unique to one promotion is a slap in the face to boxing history.
“Do you think I would disrespect boxing so much if I said, we’re going to bring out the ‘Matchroom Boxing World Championship’?” Hearn said. “My ego is out of control, it should be – that is beyond anything I could ever fathom or ever do.”
Zuffa Boxing plans to hold its third event on Sunday at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. Headlining the card will be a heavyweight clash between Efe Ajagba and former IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin.
