Liverpool is the fourth team in Premier League history to lose four games in a row as reigning champions.
Brentford beat them 3-2 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon to hand them their fifth defeat in their last six games in all competitions.
The Reds have now lost as many league games as last season, while becoming the first team to win their first five games and lose the next four.
It is worth noting that no team has ever lost four games in a row and successfully defended their crown. These are the other sides that Arne Slot’s men have imitated.
Each Premier League champion loses four games in a row
Leicester City – 2016/17
A setback was certainly expected after Leicester City completed the miracle of all miracles and won the Premier League. But they were much worse than expected, with N’Golo Kante’s loss to Chelsea hitting them particularly hard.
Claudio Ranieri signed a new four-year contract in August but left before the end of the season. A fivegame losing streak, which included defeats to Chelsea, Southampton, Burnley, Manchester United and Swansea in January and February, spelled the end for the Italian.
Craig Shakespeare stepped in, initially as interim boss, and steadied the ship to avoid becoming the first champions to be relegated. But they still hold the record for worst title defense and are 12th in the rankings.

Liverpool – 2020/21
After achieving one of the most dominant title wins in Premier League history and ending a thirty-year wait for the trophy, Liverpool had a miserable campaign the following year.
Their invincible atmosphere was shattered by a shock 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa, although they were still in title talks in the winter, which was buoyed by a 7-0 win over Crystal Palace in December.
The Merseyside team then went winless in their next five Premier League appearances, culminating in a 1–0 defeat to Burnley at Anfield which ended a 68-match unbeaten run at home.
Liverpool bounced back with back-to-back wins, but worse was yet to come. They lost six of their next seven games in February and March, including four consecutive defeats to Brighton, Manchester City, Leicester and Everton, dropping them to eighth in the table.
Remarkably, they won eight of their remaining ten matches, drawing the other two, to finish third and qualify for the Champions League.

Manchester City – 2024/25
Pep Guardiola led his City side to an unprecedented four Premier League titles in a row, but was unable to follow this up with a fifth. They didn’t even challenge last season.
City actually started the campaign in rock-solid form, winning eight and drawing two of their opening ten games. However, they only win one of their next nine as the rot sets in during the winter.
It started with away losses to Bournemouth and Brighton, before being hammered at home by Spurs. Liverpool confirmed their status as front runners for top spot with a 2–0 win at Anfield on 1 December.
City eventually recovered in the second half of the season to finish third, but not before Arsenal dismantled them with a 5–1 win at the Emirates Stadium, cementing the Gunners’ place in the top two.

Liverpool – 2025/26
Before the opening month of this season, Liverpool fans dared to dream that they could successfully defend a league title for the first time in 42 years. A string of late goals saw them win all their first five games, including a 1–0 win over challengers Arsenal, which put them top of the table.
However, the warning signs were there. The Reds played poorly and were saved by late penalties and moments of magic. Apart from Hugo Ekitike, the new signings failed to integrate as Slot struggled to fit its expensively assembled group of players into a structure.
That hasn’t changed in the past month, with the side looking rudderless in successive defeats to Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Manchester United and Brentford. There was a 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, but that seems to be a bit of an anomaly.
47 – Liverpool have now lost as many Premier League games this season as they did in all of last season (4). They have lost four league games in a row for the first time since February 2021, while their previous four defeats were in a run of 47 games (W32 D11).… pic.twitter.com/awgrpXOkgN
