McGregor and Poirier fought three times in the UFC.
Their first meeting took place in the featherweight division way back in 2014. McGregor won that meeting via TKO in the first round. It was an important win for the Irish MMA superstar as he had talked a lot of nonsense before the fight and had to figure it out.
McGregor’s second meeting with Poirier came years later, in the lightweight division, in 2021. Unlike their first meeting, there wasn’t much trash talk from either man in the lead-up. That ultimately worked out well for McGregor, as Poirier evened the score with a TKO of his own in the first round.
After Poirier McGregor retired in early 2021, they met for a third time to settle their 1-1 draw later that year. In the build-up to the trilogy fight, McGregor unleashed a lot of vicious nonsense, even against Poirier’s wife. Ultimately, he failed to back this up as Poirier won by TKO in the first round, leaving his rival with a broken leg.
McGregor continued to talk trash in the immediate aftermath of his second loss to Poirier, but hasn’t fought since and has seemingly cooled off in the meantime. He even congratulated Poirier on the birth of his newest child.

McGregor’s congratulatory message prompted Ariel Helwani to ask Poirier about their rivalry during a recent interview.
Poirier made it abundantly clear that he hasn’t forgiven McGregor for all the talk leading up to their third fight.
“F**k Conor,” he said.
When Helwani went looking for more information, Poirier just shook his head in clear contempt for the Irishman.
While McGregor would certainly like to get another win over Poirier after this comment, he appears to have missed his opportunity. Poirier retired after a close loss to Max Holloway last summer.
