Although there is a lot of pressure on his shoulders, Makhachev has already written his name in the history books. He is one of the best hunters of his generation, and some would claim that he is one of the best of all time. He forged that legacy with thanks to his great run at Lightweight, including him reigning Supreme as champion.
In a recent interview, Dustin Poirier gave his opinion about the future of Islam Makhachev.
Poirier’s opinion about the lightweight future of Makhachev
“It will depend on whether he wins or loses, but it is not easy to set up the weight – he is already a very solid lightweight hunter,” Poirier told MMA Junkie van Makhachev. “To have the freedom to fill and put on more muscles and fill in your framework as your body wants to be, to go back to 155, it will take some time, I think, to really have a lack of calorie and to lose some of the muscles he turns on.
“I am sure that he makes 155 not easy, so now it is getting even more difficult. He can be completely ready with lightweight. It may be too difficult for his body to go back and compete at that level because he is not a little guy at all.”
“I think when we see him there against another good weight, he will feel the part,” said Poirier. “He is going to look like a good weight hunter. He is a big guy, and I am enthusiastic about that fight. If JDM’s Takedown defends defense, and he leaves Islam to him, it can be a long night. But that is so much easier said when these guys are on your body and on your body.”
