Drew Millas and Riley Adams perform better than Keibert Ruiz in his absence

The catcho room of the Nationals was the worst in baseball for the first 3 months of the season, and there was no debate. From the beginning of the season to 5 July (the last match of Kibert Ruiz before they were placed on the IL with a concussion), they ranked 2nd to last in WRC+ in baseball with 54, for only the Giants, and 2nd to last in baseball in defensive war with -6.1, only for the Astros. In contrast to the giants and Astros, who got a positive impact on one side of the ball, but not the other of their catchers, the nationals did not receive any of them, which led them to have a worst baseball -1.7 fwar from their catchers, at pace for the worst baseball history.

Although part of the fault for the catching misery could be assigned to subsequently Back -up of Catcher Riley Adams, who placed a 21 WRC+ and -0.7 Fwar until 28 games, the majority of debt could be placed on the Starter Keibert Ruiz, who had a 65 WRC and -1.0 Fwar in 68 Games. There was some hope for 2025 to be a breakout year for Ruiz after posting an 113 WRC+ in April, but Hope faded after he set up a 54 WRC+ in May and a terrible -7 WRC+ in June, while he was one of the worst defenders in all the baseball.

Although it was a shame to see the 2025 season of Ruiz, which may have ended by a concussion in July, because head injury is never anything to take light, the silver lining was a chance to see what the NOTS had in their back -upders, Riley Adams and Drew Millas. And it turns out that they might have something. Just watch the comparison of the figures from then Ruiz was the starter, until now with Riley Adams and Drew Millas the time behind the dish.

National Catchers Numbers From the Opening Day until July 5 (89 games)

BSR (Base Running Runs above average): -2.6 (23rd)

Defensive War: -6.1 (29th)

National Catchers Numbers from 6 July to 6 August (27 games)

Defensive War: 0.0 (23rd)

The monster is smaller, but the results are unmistakably better. After spending six months by getting some of the worst beating, fielding and baseunning from the catcher position, the Nationals who catch tandem of Adams and Millas have combined to become on average to great in all 3 categories. Riley Adams mainly benefited from the extra playing time, because after the first 3 months he was one of the worst back -catchers in baseball and possibly set up a 113 WRC+ on DFA watch and raised his BB/K ratio of 0.05 as a backup to 0.28 as a starter.

Drew Millas, from whom I have called to get the majority of representatives now for a while because his defense and basic Miles are for Ruiz and Adams, also comes to his chance to show what he has at the level of the big league. In 11 games, Millas has placed a 148 WRC+, 0.50 BB/K ratio and 0.5 Fwar, while he is an above-average framer behind the dish and shows one of the best pop times of all catchers in baseball. Iron squeezes iron, and in a fight to prove who deserves to be the full-time backup of the Nationals, Adams and Millas have both proven themselves more than Ruiz in the past 3 years.

So what happens when Ruiz returns? If it was still Mike Rizzo and Davey Martines, you could bet he would be back to his normal job, catching 6 times a week and hit Nationals in the back half of the line -up. But with them away, there is little binding of a new regime to Ruiz other than the fact that his contract connects him to at least 2030 with the Nationals. If he returns in 2025, he will have to prove that he can manage his defensive misery, or otherwise the NATS will probably look to make an upgrade in catcher in the winter.

Ruiz could eventually become the backup of the team, or the team may have the feeling that Riley Adams or Drew Millas has more to offer in a back-up and send him to Triple-A, where he has to refine his board approach and returns to hit the ball in the same way as at the start of his career. Although Ruiz no longer has a minor league options and has to give up, there is almost no chance that a team will take it and his contract, and if they do, it is a reason for celebration for National fans.
