Drake Baldwin takes the lead for the Rookie race of National League

The Front-Runner consensus for National League Rookie of the year was only on the visiting Dugout bank before the rain delayed on Citifield on Wednesday.

Drake Baldwin, a catcher, had the night free because the Mets started a left -handed pitcher, David Peterson, and Baldwin Bats with left -handed.

He then laughed a report to him that Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox once visited the left-handed Slugger David Justice against left-handed pitchers, but then played him every day after the Braves Dale Murphy had traded to Philadelphia in the middle season.

Every day Justice not only played that he could hit left, but she hit so well that he won the 1990 NL Rookie Award.

Five-RBI game

Baldwin’s bat could win the same honor; He is the only Rookie in the history of the Atlanta Braves who knocked twice in a competition in a competition (Rico Carty did it for the Milwaukee Braves in 1964, two years before the team moved south).

The last time came August 7, when Baldwin had three hits and two home runs against the Miami Marlins. It was the only multi-gay game that he could remember.

“I tried to hit another,” Baldwin admitted, often used as the number 3 Slagman in the line -up of Atlanta. “It would have been nice.”

Instead, the young catcher collected an RBI single in his last at bat.

Baldwin wore no. 75 as an unknown Rookie during the spring training, but received no. 30 as soon as the season was opened.

Murphy’s accident

The softly spoken resident of Wisconsin, who took his way to the Varsity-Roster with strong impressions in the Arizona Fall League 2024 and 2025 spring training, opened the season in the starting line-up after veteran Sean Murphy was put aside by a broken rib bag.

The same injury was later set aside All-Star Werger Chris Sale, who made an impression on Baldwin when the Rookie receiver was assigned to catch him.

“He knows what he is doing,” Baldwin said about sale, the defensive winner of the National League Cy Young Award.

Baldwin’s top perspective and no. 37 from Atlanta and No. 37 in the Majors, Baldwin started playing on Wednesday with an impact average of .285, 13 home runs, a .470 Slugging percentage and a .823 Ops. He was tied up with Javy Lopez for the second most gay people ever produced by a catcher in Atlanta.

Baldwin started 55 games behind the record and 10 more as a designated batter.

He enjoys his best piece since the calendar turned to Augustus. This month he will hit .324 with a .861 Ops with two home runs and 11 RBIs.

Baldwin’s last tear has been pulled forward in the race for National League Rookie of the year.

Red -hot rookies

Earlier this week, writers on MLB.com rated the 6-0, 210 pound Wisconsin resident the tough favorite to win the Rookie trophy. Others who received voices were Marlins Catcher Agustin Ramirez, Brewers Rookies Issac Collins, an outfielder, and Jacob Misirowski, a right -handed pitcher, Plus Cubs Right -handed Cad Horton.

Although Atlanta has played with the idea of keeping Baldwin’s bat in the line every day, it is almost limited to catching or DH tasks. That means that Sean Murphy, the other catcher or Marcell Ozuna, the regular designated Slagman, must sit.

Even as an amateur, Baldwin was mainly a catcher and only played a little at first base. And the first Honkman of Atlanta, Matt Olson, has a series of 740 consecutive games played, the longest active string in the game. Subject to injury, he is not quick.

In the meantime, manager Brian Snitker loves Baldwin as a backstop, and even compares him with Brian McCann, one of Atlanta’s best catchers of recent vintage. Just like Baldwin, McCann was a left -handed batter with strength.

Financially Baldwin is a bargain for the Braves. He earns the minimum of $ 760,000 and is under club control during the 2030 campaign, although he could win a year of service time if he wins the Rookie Award.

If he maintains his first-year performance, he could even win a trip to next year’s All-Star game in Philadelphia.
