Drake Baldwin, Braves 3-1

Drake Baldwin, Braves 3-1

I had a terrible feeling about this.

And then Drake Baldwin de Braves started completely.

Let’s start with the pitching before we arrive there – Hurston Waldrrep looked really good.

The young Righty threw many pitches in this, because it cost 102 litters to go through 5.2 innings, but the splitter worked. Waldreep received whiffs at 52% (13 out of 25 swings) from his splitters, and he ended with 9 strikeouts on the evening. The Philadelphia Phillies clearly struggled to find out what the field did, and Waldrep seemed like the former first round pick.

He really only came across a few problems.

The first was a shaky bottom of the third. Nick Castellanos, of the running speed of 5.1%, started a walk and Harrison Bader ended with a single about what can be described as just “one of those plays, you know”. Waldrrep straighten the ship then by eliminating Bryson Stott, but then he got himself in more hot water by letting a single from Trea Turner. This brought Kyle Schwarber and I will admit that I had a kind of “here we’re”. It turns out that I didn’t have to do it, because Schwarber took it out, and Bryce Harper has shown herself harmless.

The second scored the actual run. It would be inaccurate to say that the starter of Atlanta Braves was in this “sharp”. He ran 4 batters and there is a reason why 102 lines were needed to not even get 6 innings (40 balls). But he was effective and he could keep them out of balance. As I said earlier today, Waldrrep started throwing a cutter, and it was actually pretty good. When you throw a cutter like a right -handed pitcher to a left -handed seizure, the goal is to actually get him in the plate on the hands of the batter. Otherwise it is just a pitch that breaks to a batter, and that is generally bad. Well, he didn’t get a cutter and Brandon Marsh took a long way in the 2nd of the 4th.

Besides that, there was really not much insult to Jesus Luzardo, who had a perfect game that worked through the first 13 batters, and he made it 6.2 innings while he hit 7, ran one, and giving up a total of 2 hits. As a writer I am happy that he showed me smart because he said he was better than his era, but as a fan of Braves I really would rather he did this to someone else. He looked good and the Braves attack did not.

The bullpen is where things went downhill for the Phillies.

In the 1st of the 8th, Orion came in and did … a bad job. After Vidal Brujan started the inning with an infield hit, the previously highly promoted illuminated prospect was the then Pinch-Hitter Drake Baldwin and Jurickson Profar to load the bases. The Phillies had had enough of that, so they went outside to get him and brought in Tanner Banks to face Matt Olson. Olson has not caused much damage, but he made contact and was in second place to bind the game to 1. Ronald Acuna made no contact, and then the Phillies, who think Ozzie Albies can hit the left in 2025, deliberately ran albies. Michael Harris got up to end the threat.

The next inning also started with an Infield Single, so more Infield Singles, please please? After Jake Fraley started with an Infield Single from the glove of Jose Alvarado, Nacho Alvarez looked like he had never beaten in his life before, but he got it down and moved Fraley to the second. They did this for Brujan for … reasons, and Brujan immediately hit. Then Drake Baldwin came … Who hit a bomb with two runs to the left field. And the Braves took a 3-1 lead that would eventually hold and prevent a four-game Sweep.

De Braves go to Chicago to compete against the Cubs for a set of three games, starting on Labor Day.
